Does anyone know if the DNA200 will operate with less than the recommended battery power?? (3 18650s get you 200watts, 2 will get you 100watts, etc.)

They're doing "hard packs" now for R/C applications, with hard cases around the LiPo's. But they're only for physical protection, they're unprotected electronically. All that can certainly be added though.
The tech is there. It only needs a manufacturer that thinks there's a market for such a battery pack.
Hmm...maybe I'll get the gig!
Mike Petro noted that the voltage input range is 9-12.6vdc, so two 18650s (at 7.4vdc) won't work.
innokin's launching a protected LiPo battery pack with the Innokin Disrupter:

Or they only last 200 cycles if the current used is high enough. For example, the LG HE4 lasts only 200 cycles at 20A. The thing about both types of batteries is that the closer you get to the C-rating (max discharge), the lower the cycle life. If someone vapes at 200W, that LiPo is probably only going to last 100~150 cycles. At 40W usage, it's going to last a lot longer.

That's true Yozhik. LiPos are no different that 18650 Lion in that regard. A good quality LiPo cell will last much longer than a bargain brand LiPo. And you are also right that pushing a cell to it's limit will degrade performance faster than using them at a moderate level. The difference with LiPos is that you can get cells that are rated at up to 100C continuous discharge rating, so a quality LiPo cell will handle the loads better than a quality Lion cell. Lion were never meant to be discharged at high C levels, where that is the strong point of LiPo cells.
Not really interested in a LiPo vs Lithium Ion holy war. The batteries use the same chemistry and both are capable of high power. For example, an ANR26650 can deliver 70A continuous power. That's almost enough power in one battery (i.e., 200W) to actually run the DNA200. And sure, someone could use a $100 5" tall 100C LiPo battery, though I think we'd have to call that a brick mod.
My only concern with LiPo is that it uses a well-designed protection package if it's meant to be swappable. Otherwise, both batteries are fine for vaping and which one a manufacturer will choose will depend on the trade-offs between them.

The sizes are very different, it would NOT be a plug and play swap. If it is possible at all would depend on your enclosure and Modding skills.

Back to the chip. I think what we are looking at with the DNA200 is a flagship device. I've seen some concern on here that there might be too much power for the average Joe Vaper or the board will be too complex. Well, you are right in some regard. This is a device designed for experienced vapers and also gives Evolv the opportunity to show everything they can do, much like YiHi did with the SX350j. This isn't designed to have market appeal to those coming off Ego batteries.
What is happening that hasn't been discussed yet is that Evolv is moving themselves into the position of being a full line chip manufacturer, much like YiHi, with low to high end.
At the low end you have the DNA25, 30 and 40. At the high end, the DNA200. What is missing for now is the middle. No one has said this yet, but I think the rumored DNA70 could very well be that mid tier chip. It could easily combine some of the tech from the 200 while allowing traditional battery power.
Flagship devices aren't for everyone, but the great part is it allows new technology to trickle down the product line. It is to early to see how this will all shake out, but this certainly takes things in an exciting direction.
Now I need to create a hidden DNA200 slush fund and hope the mod looks enough like some of my old ones that my wife won't know it is a new mod...
P.S. - Personally, I applaud Evolv for actually going with a battery pack that will guarantee enough voltage for accurate power delivery. Sure, there are other 200 watt mods out there with traditional batteries... however, they don't have the voltage to get to that point so they resort to electronic trickery *cough* Snow Wolf *cough*. Regardless of your views of lipos, at least with the DNA200 your are going to get a flat power delivery all the way to 200 watts.

Yes I am certain this is going to happen. I cannot see any possibility that Evolv limit themselves to a 200W device requiring a Lipo or 3x18650. There's going to be a DNA 70, or 80, or whatever they can make work with 1x18650.
Plenty of people love their single battery devices - the rDNAs, the Hana v4m, etc. I don't know the sizes of Lipos so maybe they can find one that small but if so I assume it won't provide the same max 200W. Even if it does, the mere fact it is 200W is going to put some people off.
It might be two weeks or it might be two months, but a middle-tier device will be announced, I am certain of it. It would be stupid not to. Once you've made the first chip, making a lesser powered version is a small fraction of the work and clearly there's the market for it.
lol. I'm getting the vapor shark simply because it looks like the DNA 40. Hopefully fool the better half.
