Yes a drip tip replaces the cartridge ("cart") and attaches to the atomizer

Drip tips are only really recommended for manual batteries that do not have an open hole in the middle of the threaded end. Generally all auto batteries have an open hole there and some manuals do. I think Vapor4Life (KR808D-1) manuals look like they have a hole but I think it is blocked off inside with a silicone thing. M401 manuals really have an open hole. I think 510 manuals have no hole.

with a cartage you wet the polyester with juice, with a drip tip, you drip a drop or two when the atty dries up, with a carto, there is no atomizer, just a wire that gets hot, and it is wrapped in polyester

if you want to "direct drip" you use a drip tip, cause you can drip through the hole in the drip tip, but you do not use the cartage anymore, the drip tip replaces it

I use a drip tip with a carto, cause I like the feel and they are easier to pull out to load the carto

No - as far as I know there are no drip tips for M401. M401 has an open hole in all its batteries, in the middle of the threaded end. And M401 has an external atty which is more suited to dipping than dripping. All of the drip tips I have see are for recessed attys where the cartridge or drip tip sticks into the open end of the atty part. (i.e. 510 and 901 for example).
