do i need to charge new batteries for 8 hours?

Hi, I am waiting for my new 510 kit and riva 1100 battery which will hopefully come today.
I'm just wondering if it is really necessary to charge for a full 8 hours, I was hoping to start using them when I go to work later this evening.
Has anyone not charged for 8 hours and had problems with their batteries?

Sorry I think I might have posted in the wrong place and I just found a post that said batteries do not need this initial 8 hour charge so I guess I just answered my own question.
I can't work out to delete this post though.

i would charge it till the light changes its most important to charge it a lil longer on the first charge so your battery life is good not short... but i have herd they come slightly charged ...
