Depends on the situation. WalMart is OK, just not around kids. Same thing with large stores, in the mall etc. No in doctors offices. I did get to vape in the hospital when I was visiting a relative who was in ICU! The nurses didn't have a problem with it at all...

I asked last week while in Pizza Hut for lunch with my sister. I really didn't think they would let me I just wanted to see what would happen. I was told yes, then had a nice conversation with my server who wanted her husband to try vaping. She asked all about my device, where I got it, what flavor I was using and if I had quit smoking. I told her yes I had quit, where I bought mine and she was going to stop by after work to buy her husband a gift.
I started vaping as a safer alternative to smoking, so generally I don't need to vape in places where smoking isn't permitted since that's what I was used to. My one and only exception is airports that don't have smoking sections. Since you can't go outside without going through the whole TSA molestation process, I will just slip into a bathroom stall and take a few hits.
I've left mine sit out, too. I usually brings a discussion and I can get a feel as to whether it is okay. But, if it is crowded and others, that are eating, etc., I step outside of just use the bathroom. Masking a scene is not beneficial.
As a general rule I don't vape indoors except at home or my office. Although, I play on several pool leagues and I will vape at the pool halls which are no smoking establishments There are a handful of us vapors there and it isn't frowned upon. I have stealth vaped at the movie theater several times as well, but for the most part I can wait until I get outside to get my fix. I always had to wait before and it doesn't bother me to wait now. I always try to be mindful of the people around me.
With the exception of my office at work I don't vape at places where smoking is not permitted.
I usually don't vape where smoking is not permitted however a couple weeks ago i used my ecig at the bowling alley and my sister inlaws boyfriend was vaping and chatting up a storm with the owner and the owner didn't say anything.
I ask permission if i'm at a friends house or something along those lines. As for public places... It depends where exactly. I won't vape at wal-mart, though I have seen people do it (which was exciting to see so close to home) I dunno. Say what you will I have never felt comfortable vaping in non outdoor public places. Might be just because I still get mistaken for a 16 year old even though i'm 21 I have no shame in admitting that i've never been one of those people who could just do things and not care about what people think, and I hope that one day soon Vaping will not have such a negative stigma attached that I wouldn't mind doing it in public places.

If it is a 'no smoking' environment, I refrain from vaping there. When I go to the 'authorized smoking areas' often someone asks about the vaping. I keep the business cards the e-juice companies send in their packages to give to the inquisitive.
Vaping is gaining traction. It's not like smoking was in the 60's/70's/80's. I feel that if we as vapors can show respect to the non-smokers (who do not like smoking or that which looks like smoking) and educate both smokers and non-smokers, then one day there may be vaping sections in restaurants, bars, and aircraft.

Granted I'm one of the new kids on the block and I still have mixed feelings about the whole where I can vs where I should vape. For now my feelings are this... if I can't shop at places like Walmart without needing to vape or smoke for that matter, because I've been in there forever then I've spent too much time and money in that store and it's time to go. I'm old enough to remember when you could smoke in stores and even as a smoker I thought it was unnecessary... but at least with vaping nobody is dropping butts on the floor and stumping them like the used to with smokes.
I do however miss being able to smoke after eating and will probably ask again in a restaurant if it's not too crowded or full of kids. I think as vapors we are walking a fine line between helping vaping become accepted or becoming total outcasts once again so we are going to have to put it out there in the public politely and carefully. At this point I refuse to slink away with my tail between my legs like I'm some kind of criminal. Last week I was stuck in a courthouse for 7 hours. After about 3 hours I went into a seating area outside of the courtroom and vaped. I didn't hide it but was respectful of those around me. I was the only one sitting there and when people walked by I was careful not to blow anything into their faces. I just smiled at them and they smiled back. Nobody said anything to me... not cops, attorneys, secretaries or passersby's. As far as I know it's not banned yet here in Alabama so I did nothing wrong. There was a no smoking sign outside of the courthouse for within 15 feet of the building.

It's unfortunate but there will always be "those types" of people out there.

I wouldn't dream of vaping in a shop or restaurant (cafe) because you are very rarely in there long enough to do without, but if I go to a pub (bar) then yes I would ask first unless I knew they banned it (JD Wetherspoons in UK) where I might stealthvape.
I respectfully disagree with not being in a restaurant long enough. I don't know about everyone else but when I go out to eat it's a social experience much like at a bar. I'm very much against being rushed or hurried while ordering and eating ( after all I'm paying good money to enjoy myself )... I enjoy the experience and enjoy ordering drinks and discussing the menu options before ordering, then you have the wait for your food..eating. then sitting and chatting over coffee when finished. If I visit a restaurant and I'm rushed through the whole thing I won't be going back. If I wanted to rush through it a I'd just go to a fast food joint

I don't vape where it is obvious there is no smoking allowed. I do, however, vape in hotel rooms as honestly that is one of the reasons I took up vaping in the first place.
I can't even guess how long it has been since I have been in any establishment that allows smoking so wouldn't occur to me to sit down at a bar that clearly is "no smoking" and ask if it is OK if I vape. I'm not saying I wouldn't love to be able to vape in a bar or something, just can't imagine it being allowed anywhere but that would be great!

I generally don't ask and don't do it in crowded places. Usually the only reason I carry my vape around in places like Home Depot or a grocery store is because I don't want it to start leaking if it gets hot in the car. I can handle a half hour or 45 minutes of shopping without becoming a nic fiend - I was always able to wait for the parking lot when I did smoke, so why not?
I usually go out of my way to avoid places like malls and Walmarts (and especially malls with a Walmart), but for movie theaters, stadiums, concert venues, and bars without smoking patios, I've got some little 350 mah Ego batteries that are smaller than the palm of my hand with an Evod attached. Use a non-smelly juice, hold your lung hit for a few seconds, no cloud...the only thing is that people might wonder why I keep itching my lip every few minutes.

Maybe vaping is much more popular in different parts of the globe. I would think it's popular where I'm at because a new vape shop opens practically every week, but I could literally count on one hand (even after a freak bandsaw accident) the number of times I have seen someone gaping "in the wild". I even travel quite a bit. I've literally only seen people vaping 3 times. Once on a cruise, where they vaped where smoking was allowed (Carnival policy. Even written on your ticket). Once there was some jerk-off blowing clouds through an entire Oriole game, until finally an usher came and asked him to stop, and he made a big scene about it not being smoke. Finally I was at a baby's Christening, and there was a couple vaping at the after party. Maybe the fact that so many people don't make a production about it around here has kept the Maryland legislature from actually doing much about it in the way of bans and taxes.
I've never asked permission too, but I do avoid it in certain areas where it might cause a problem, mainly restaurants. One exception to that is the subway on campus, they don't mind if I do it at all. My professors don't seem to mind it much if I vape in class, I've even been asked what flavor I'm vaping. One of my professors doesn't approve, so I just keep it put away and take off from class about 30 minutes in since that's all we're required to be there since it's a mostly online course. It is, however, specifically banned at my office so it stays put away till I take a bathroom break where I can get my fix. It's mostly used as a stress management tool for me now that I've quit smoking completely, so it's helpful to be able to do it wherever.
Hilarious. I teach at a university and I'll vape in class when I have a 3-hour lecture w/out breaks. It's technically against school policy but I've educated my students and they're ok with it. Actually some have quit smoking and now show up with their vaping device.

Those places obviously see a lot of me and my money. Corporately-run coffee places that have a no-vape policy even outside see neither me nor my money.
I think that at most mom-and-pop establishments it depends on how they are first approached. Just remember to diplomatic and respectfully informative as you are an ambassador for the rest of us. In my experience most local places are willing to give their best customers the benefit of the doubt. Assuming an entitlement posture from the get go can be counter-productive and that hurts all vapers in the long run.
