I generally don't vape anywhere that smoking isn't permitted, with the exception of airports that don't have smoking lounges (bathroom for a quick hit or three), hotel rooms and rental cars. I've never had a problem making it through a meal, movie or trip to a mall/big box store without having to bolt outside for an analog, so I just continue on like that.

I've had a couple of bars and restaurants notice me heading outside with my PV in hand and tell me I was welcome to vape inside. That, to me, is the level of mutual respect we're shooting for. I respect the assumed policy of no smoking indoors therefore no vaping because of an uneducated public, and those who know what they're seeing reward that respect by inviting me to vape in their establishment. At minimum, it opens conversations in a friendly/curious manner without putting them on the spot and forcing them to say no to a customer.

I don't vape in public. It's just a quirk of mine. I don't want chit chat from strangers.

ya know, that totally doesn't surprise me. the expression in your avatar pic has this, "I'm asking you nicely to back off" vibe to it. what's the story behind that pic anywhos? enquiring craybees wanna know.

I don't get out and about much these days, but I did ask at the restaurant/bar in our very small town. They're fine with it, though I did feel almost an obligation to try to explain that it is not "just water vapor" as the owner believed.

I did wait until it was quiet and asked the actual owner, and I do refrain when there are families with children near me, in part because I tend toward antisocial and don't really want to start a conversation explaining it.

Most other places I'm not there long enough to need to vape. The only exception might be waiting at the clinic, but they have a sign saying not to, so I don't.

While it's not illegal around here, I do ask in bars. I haven't vaped in restaurants, since I haven't been able to smoke in one in years it really doesn't bother me not to vape in one. Same with stores, I can make it through a shopping trip without vaping so why draw attention. The places I have asked if it's ok have never said no though.

I don't bother at restaurants simply because I know either A- people will freak out over the vapor getting in the food or B- it's just mostly not allowed.

Now, at the mall or at walmart I usually just take a few rips and put it away for a little while,,, depending on the people around me i'll blow it up in the air or down towards the ground, never at eye level. Gotta be considerate you know what I mean. Obviously people here and there are going to have a problem with it but I usually just make sure to not blow clouds in peoples faces as much as I can, common courtesy is all.

Thought it was funny checking out a new shop and they had a sign saying no smoking and below saying, But vaping is allowed. Lol

Technically it isn't smoking, so I don't worry so much about smoking prohibitions. I have yet to see a no smoking sign that includes ecigs.

I assess the situation and if I'm not in anyone's personal space I'll stealth vape. Most of the time no one notices at all. I vape in a way that vapor goes into my mouth and hardly anything escapes. Then, I exhale downward. I've had waitresses and employees notice and no one has asked me not to vape. They all want to know the same things ... Was I able to quit smoking using my ecig? Does it satisfy the nicotine habit? Where can they get one and what kind is best?

Almost everyone who doesn't smoke tells me that they have a relative that needs to quit smoking and they want to buy one for that person. So far, in 4 years of vaping when I'm out, absolutely no one has scolded me or acted offended when I vape inside. It's been 100% positive and inquisitive when people mention it.

About a month ago I was in Best Buy vaping as I walked by the checkouts. I hear someone say, "Sir! Sir!". I looked around and a female associate was headed my way. I thought, "Here comes my first public scolding!". When she got closer she started asking me about my ecig and her first question was what flavor I was vaping. She was a new vaper and wanted to know where I bought my supplies, what kind of ecig I was using, and was I able to quit smoking cigarettes. We talked for a few minutes and it was a positive encounter, as usual.

I'm just happy that I can vape in my own house and my own car, where, by self-imposed restriction, I hadn't smoked for nearly 20 years. I was already used to not smoking in public indoor and some outdoor areas that it usually doesn't even occur to me to vape there.

Agreed. Nobody has ever been allowed to smoke in my car or house. Gross.

When in a public place like a bookstore, restaurant, coffee shop, business office, do ask permission to vape?

My job takes me to a lot of client offices and today I was working on a clients computer and I asked if she minded if I used my e-cig. She said, "no problem, I use one myself". I thought that was pretty cool.

I think it's our responsibility as intelligent vapers who have/are trying to get away from analogues, to be polite and set a good name for ourselves. It's certainly more polite than giving those around you second-hand cancer :D, but seriously we are kind of a "rare breed" minority group (as of now, it's growing quickly) but as the pioneers of vaping, I think we should set a good stigma on ourselves. We don't want to give that "ban the sale of e-liquid" bill in NY any ammo against us, I think it'd be incredibly douchey to vape in a small close quarters (like a bus or subway) without permission from those around, especially if there's children/babies etc.

~I think it's awesome that you asked :), I really hope I never see that vaper that just walks in a hot-boxes the area, that'll make us all look bad. The only place I've ever vaped outside is at a "smoke friendly" bar, the breakroom at work (permission from co-workers/boss, and stealthily in a movie theater :p. I only vaped in the movied theater because I had my aspire nautilus so it wasn't rediculous vapor, I sat in the back so no-one had their view messed up by my "clouds", and it was very large and only 1/4 full. I turned my provari's light off and kept it in my hoody sleeve like james bond :2cool:

i usually don't ask for permission. vaping is legal in public places and I'm going to enjoy that while i can. that being said i decide whether vaping is appropriate in given situations. if I'm in a large store that is not crowded i will vape freely. if there is a lot of people i will try to stealth vape. if I'm in a small store and its packed to the brim with people i usually hold off on vaping until i exit the store. although its legal i want to be respectful. people have the right not to be exposed to e cigs just like they have the right not to be exposed to analogs. if i vape in a packed area where i know my exhale is going to go into peoples faces, i feel like i am stealing away their right to clean lungs and although e-cigs are not harmful (as of now) the general consensus among non-vapers is that it is still harmful. so i just try to be respectful. there are so many opportunities to vape throughout the day i feel it is not a big deal to put it down for 10 minutes until you can get away from other non-vapers.
