Do you just vape in establishments, or ask first?

I am new to the vaping world and love this site. Lots of cool and helpful members! I have read other posts about specific places people vape and all that, but am wondering -- do you just vape inside a bar, restaurant, store, work, etc without asking? Or do you always ask if it's permitted first?

I remember when I first started smoking, in the 80's, you could literally smoke a cigarette anywhere inside. You could walk into 7-11 or grocery store, etc with a lit cigarette AND when you were done, you could stomp it out on the tile floor. That was the norm back then, it was typical. Can you imagine doing that today? LOL

But I should get my first e-cig (eGo/CE4 blister pack) today and will be going to dinner with family tomorrow. Wondered if I should just vape while in the restaurant, or should I ask first? They do have a smoking patio but wondered if I should just vape at my table without asking?

How many of you actually vape inside somewhere without asking first, is that frowned upon or is it risky? I can only imagine if you just vape at a table in a restaurant or inside a store, everyone's initial reaction would be "omg he's smoking in here", not realizing its vapor and not cigarette smoke.

Thank you.

I've vaped in stores/restaurants/common areas at work. But I stealth vape. I just hold it in longer than normal then exhale with force downward toward the ground. That puts the vapor to a nearly invisible state. I don't see the need to do a "look at MEEEEEE !!" nuclear plume cloud toward the ceiling whether or not "I have the right" or whatever mantra is currently quoted.

I get my nic fix, the non-smokers are none the wiser.

Both sides win.

I've learned that quite a few people can not tell the difference between smoke and vapor. Some highly educated people still believe I'm exhaling smoke. I try to explain by asking, "When you boil water, is the rising steam smoke or vapor ?" Amazingly, quite a few said, "smoke".

I think it's going to take quite a while before the regular Joe knows the difference between smoke and vapor. The see what they are expecting to see; and that's smoke.

Do you find that a majority of establishments allow you to vape after you ask? Or are they like "no smoking, period" ? I am wondering if more and more places are more receptive and informative about harmless vaping.
It really depends on the establishment. . If I'm in a bar where i see smokers.. i don't ask. If it's a non smoking bar.. i would either ask or stealth. If I'm at a five star restaurant. . I wouldn't vape unless i saw 2 or more people vaping.
I usually just feel out the surroundings before deciding.

I don't vape in the restaurant, but I do keep it in my pocket. If I feel the need, I will stealth vape in a hallway or near the restroom. I do stealth vape in the theatre. Lately some flicks are almost 3 hours long and I don't want to miss it. Just hold it in longer, I did get weird looks from someone sitting next to me, but I generally do it before the film starts, that way, if they have a question I just explain it to them. Never had a confrontation in the movies. Sometimes I'll get that special someone who asks if you can put other types of "substances" in there. I just tell them we are in FL, not California. :)

I have vaped in sports bars, restaurants, office buildings, courthouses, etc BUT respectfully. In restaurants and sports bars I usually show my Vamo or Darwin to the bartender or server, explain what it is, do a small demonstration and ask if I can. I have only been told no, once. And that was because the owner was worried that he might get asked by smokers if they could smoke. If the restaurant is very crowded and the seating is close, I will usually just wait to vape.

I always ask and have never been refused. There are a few chain pubs / restaurants in the UK who have banned vaping and most have signs up, i never use those places.
In my experience most smaller places are happy with allowing you to vape because it is obvious to anyone watching (and smelling) that it is not smoke.
Larger establishments make the claim that vaping is banned because it looks too much like smoking (these people are idiots).
The bottom line is always ask. If they allow it you will generally get a smile. If they don't allow it you'll be asked to stop anyway (with a frown) !!

I generally try not to vape in places where smoking is prohibited. Unfortunately we live in the kind of climate where those two things are lumped together, and I just try to straight up avoid the hassle.

I vape at my desk at work, and I vape in the grocery store in the town I live in. I live in a small town, and everyone knows the wife and I vape, and we've got a few other people in town into vaping as well. So I don't have an issue with that. Hell they let us vape at the doctors office.

Despite that, I've been a big proponent of the "let's not give them the ammunition they want" style of thinking since I first started vaping last year. I avoid conflict over it because sometimes people can be incredibly closed minded and stubborn when even the slightest appearance of "smoke" is involved.

Great input everyone. I pretty much figured it was best to ask first and not take any risks or chances. What I find a bit strange is that some have mentioned here and other posts, they vape in doctors offices and hospitals, yet, most restaurants you cant. You would seem hospitals and doctors offices would be the LAST place you could vape considering how sterile they are.

my apologies to all you "nice" people out there, I take an attitude, I am NOT smoking, I am vaping, I vape where ever I want to unless it is specifically illegal (an airplane was the one instance). I have had surprisingly few confrontations.

In one bar/pool hall another lady was told she could not use her e-cig look-a-like. I started using my provari. That was about 3 months ago, now I have the waitresses asking me what flavor I am using. I also have at least 10 other people using ego's. Currently we are all ignored. It is a non-smoking bar, all bars in NH are non-smoking, smokers have to go outside.

I vape a ton at work, but I always ask my co workers if it bothers them. Actually, most enjoy the fragrance and ask about it. That said, I don't vape in front of my boss. I'm a direct care worker for people with brain injuries, so I work with people. I let one client borrow a battery and cartomizer full of liquid to try for a little while. Anyways, he took it and smoked it inside at our admin offices in front of the owner of my company, eh. :-/ Thus far, no one has asked me to go outside.

I don't ask, but I don't vape in places where its obviously objectionable. Like schools or hospitals. I also do NOT stealth vape. It makes it seem like something you need to hide. I vape openly and confidently, in restaurants I exhale straight down with my nose. The only response I get, if any, is one of curiosity, usually from a smoker.

Come on vapers, be confident.

I have to agree with Brewmaster B. If im in a bar, i will ask to not only be courteous but also maybe enlighten people/owners/waitpersons about vaping and its benefits. I have been asked not to do it by a couple of them due to the fact they didnt want analog smokers complaining due to ignorance. "Hey, Hes smoking....Why cant I??" Stealth vaping....No. Im a proud and courteous vaper and im happy to teach people about it!!
