What exactly is dry burning? And what's the importance of it?

Is it putting a cartomizer on a e cig and firing it with no juice in it? That sounds to me like a very terrible idea and that it would burn out your carto.

Hi

You are correct that you can't dry burn a carto, the filler material will fry. People "dry burn" coils to get stubborn gunk off of them. There are videos on youtube that would probably give you a better idea. But some of us choose not to dry burn at all. :)

Dry burning is for turning the accumulated gunk on a used coil into ash, so that the coil can perform better. It should NEVER be done on a filler-based cartomizer, as that filler will scorch and the carto will taste burnt permanently, rendering it useless. Coils in atomizers and clearomizers can benefit from a dry burn periodically, if they use silica or stainless wicking, which can withstand high temperatures. Cotton, bamboo and hemp wicking will burn much like a carto's filler, so the wicks must be removed before dry burning.

How to dry burn is covered in numerous posts here and on youtube, so a search can help you find out more if it applies to your setup. If you're using regular cartomizers, it doesn't apply.

Yes, it's firing up the coil after rinsing off any remainng juice. This burns off any residual juice that hardened on to the coil, bringing the coil back to close to new condition for another round of vaping. Should'nt be done at high voltage, I usually dry burn between 3.4 and 3.7 volts, depending. Sure it puts some wear on the coil, but the alternative is getting rid of the carto/coil or recoiling, easy decision. I routinely get a month or more use out of a coil, dry burning every couple of days. You can't dry burn poly filled cartos, the material will burn, it's done with attys or coils with a wick that can take the heat without burning.
