My daughter was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis when she was 14, it went into remission at 17. She's been a smoker since about the age of 15. She is now 32 and decided to quit smoking last February. Just this week, her UC came back with a vengeance, but she has been using E-cigs since the day she quit, a little over a year ago. She's using 18mg nic, so it appears that there's something else in cigarette smoke that keeps the UC at bay. I've read numerous accounts of people whose UC came back within a year after quitting, but some (not all) say the e-cigs help. I was wondering if anyone here had any information or insight on this particular problem. She doesn't want to smoke again, and I don't want to see her start again, but her UC is pretty debilitating. Thanks for any helpful information. Karen (Calypso53)

I had the same thing happen to me after 7 months of vaping. Nothing the Dr tried seemed to help in the long term. I started smoking again :( 3 or 4 a day and haven't had much issues for over a year. It sucks. The Dr's clueless but there's something else in cigarettes it seems other than nicotine that helps. I've even tried WTA's but always a flare up if I quit completely.

Maybe it's like anything else, some it helps, some it doesn't. I feel for your daughter, as I've been battling this for a year now. Not sure if the ecigs are helping or not. I don't know what it would be like if I went w/o them, or at a lower nic level than I'm at. Mine started after several months of vaping, and I was dropping down on the nic level. I was at 4 mg, down from 18mg, when it hit. Unfortunately, there is no cure, as I'm sure you know, and the doctors don't know much about it, except for what "usually" works. I wish your daughter the best.

Thanks for the replies. Yes we have a doctor appt with a gastroenterologist (same one she had 14 years ago) but it's not till next week, and she's in a lot of pain, losing a lot of blood and has been vaping continuously for a year. I've seen some posts on other UC forums where people have gone back to 3 to 5 cigs a day because the general consensus there seems to be that there must be something in cigarettes besides nicotine that helps with UC. To go back to smoking would really suck, we have her two year old son, my grandson, living here and we were all so happy the vaping got us all off smoking so easily! But the UC symptoms can be very debilitating, to the point where you're running to the bathroom upwards of 20 times a day, can't easily work, feel weak all the time, etc.

What about another reduced harm product such as Swedish snus? That would contain WTA's, unless it's something else in the actual smoke that makes the difference. One thing I did read is that there is a theory that hydrogen cyanide in smoke may be what helps UC. I honestly don't know anything, though. If she does go back to smoking, perhaps she could smoke 3-5 a day like others and use the PV the rest of the day. I don't think a few cigarettes a day carry much risk, but that's just my opinion. I'm glad I don't have UC. I hope it all works out. Sorry she is going through this and having to contemplate going back to cigarettes.

I'm not a purest for myself. I tend to look at cutting down to 3 or 5 cigs a day from 2 packs a day a sort of miracle since I started at 11 and smoked for 58 years. If I had a medical condition that smoking helped, I would not hesitate to smoke at whatever level brought me improvement. I mean, after all, I started vaping for my health and to not take (in the form of a smoke) something for the same reason, I would. There are many choices like that we have to make. Most of the meds I have to take carry risks and some have side effects almost as bad as what I take them for but the odds are they'll increase my longevity so I take them. Unless you are or live with a diabetic you don't know the health consequences of taking insulin for instance... just one example.

I wish your daughter a speedy return to health and my heart goes out to you in your concern for her.

Has she tried actual tobacco extraction type ejuice? I'm not talking about WTA vendors.

A couple of Naturally Extracted Tobacco ( NET) vendors who I've tried and liked are:
Heather's Heavenly Vapes
The Plume Room - Candied Cavendish

There is also some vendors who make their tobacco ejuices from tobacco absolute, another type of extraction. They all have a distinct taste and aftertaste, which makes me think they could have different properties that might also be helpful.
Velvet Cloud Vapor makes this kind.

There is a thread in the eliquid forum all about extracted tobaccos and some real experts in the matter. You might want to join in and ask for other vendors. Natural Tobaccos

Your story definitely hits close to home. I quit smoking back in 2010 with snus. A few months later I developed UC, never had it before. I've had a few flare ups where I was hospitalized. One time I almost didn't make it. I picked up vaping last year and I do believe it's helped. Right now is the longest I've gone without a flare up. I finally got insurance again and have an appointment in April. I don't want to smoke a few cigarettes a day. They are disgusting to me.

The past month or two I've been a bit weak. People have been commenting that I'm pale etc. I've been bleeding a little here and there but not enough to warrant a hospital stay. I have to say vaping has been helping a lot better than snus. I also use nasal snuff so that may be helping as well. Who knows.
