I wouldn't worry about hotels. In fact I have vaped up a storm in hotel rooms and never had a problem (I am still too chicken to vape on a plane so I chew gum). I think the airplane bathroom story included blowing vaper right at the detector. I am sure its still in the Travel section. You should check there for more stories.

There are 2 types of smoke detectors for most applications - ionization detectors and photoelectric detectors. Without getting into too much detail on how each one works, if you hold your drag to where you don't have a visible exhale of vapor, you should be fine with a photoelectric detector. If you're using an autobat and take a primer puff, you could be in trouble with sensitive ones as in airplanes. I can't testify to the effect of PG or VG (which is essentially the lion's share of the antagonist for either version of smoke detection) as I don't know how they react to an ionization chamber.
