Never seen the stainless in person. The black though is some (surprisingly durable) rubbery-type coating. It's not "paint" or a sticker and has a little bit of grippyness to it. If you've ever worked with automotive undercoating it's kind of a very very fine version of that, or a very thin layer of plastidip. Best thing I can describe it as. I don't baby my e-power at all and while the coating has almost worn completely off my switch, the black coating looks like new and hasn't even gotten a scratch. The black coating is probably the highest quality feature on the whole PV

I've had mine for maybe 3 months now. If you're thinking about buying an e-power.. buy something different. My $.02

From all that I've read about the E-power. The finish on the black ones usually chip off pretty fast/easily which means that it's not durable. IMO, if you were to get one then get the SS finish since it's gonna stay that way for a while. No, it's not fake junk but, it's probably made from aluminum. Not sure since I've personally never owned one.

You get what you pay for. I've had countless issues with batteries that it likes to eat, the finish on the switch is terrible and all the threads are garbage. I've spent 20 minutes before trying to get the battery tube to thread into the switch without it trying to crossthread. Sometimes it goes together, sometimes it fights. I'm a mechanic, so it's not like I'm uneducated when it comes to trying to screw something together cleanly.

The two batteries that came with the kit don't work anymore, and it ate one out of the two batteries I got from madvapes. IMO the whole "modular" design would be much better if things didn't constantly NEED replacing. The charger is a PITA too, you need to fiddle with it for 30 seconds before it'll actually make contact and start charging. I'm counting on my switch to fail sometime soon. A lot of places have stopped carrying them lately because of QC issues.

I was really psyched to get my e-power, sounded like a great idea. But after living with it for a few months I wish I got something else. I'd rather buy a $20 ego battery or something that'll last a year or more and work flawlessly than keep having to screw around with this thing.

I'd consider a KGO - similar price, similar capacity and MUCH better batteries -
KGO 1100 mAh 2 battery kit

What seems to be talked about is the e-power 18650. It dose have all the issues mentioned and some suppliers have stopped carrying it due to QC issues.
The suppliers are right about the 18650 QC, Smoktech even went to thinner brass tubes on the latest versions of the 18650 so thin that Smoktech had to use an insert for threads. This change means the new switch is slightly larger then the old switch resulting in people complaining that the new switch they ordered does not fit in the tube they have... go figger.
The above applies to the 5 volt switch, it is made for the tubes with the thread insert not the older thicker tube that is threaded.

Now none of this applies to the e-power 14650, suppliers are still carry that one, even though it may have some minor issues it works very well.

I have both versions and I have managed to keep them all working. I find the both of them to be of great value so long as you pay little for them.

I have both the black and the stainless versions of the ePower 14650s. I've not had ANY problems at all with the finish on any part of them, nor have I had any issues with threading.

Both came with the newer switches (the harder plastic vs the soft rubber) and on the black one, I have noticed a little silliness where it will stay on after I've released it, and has to be wiggled a bit.

Also, I've read that the ePower was supposed to be regulated so that the last hit before the battery is drained is supposed to be as good as the first. However, what I've noticed is that after a while, I seem to get less vapor and flavor. If I drop a fresh battery in it, all is well. Not a HUGE complaint, being that the battery still lasts a good while, but it's not what was 'advertised'. Mind you, I don't have a meter to be able to confirm.

Other than that, they've been pretty decent devices.
