This is exactly the right area to get responses.

Recently I've seen a similar thread, in this forum area the answer is that the person had picked up an add-in to their browser, nothing to do with ecf.

Take s look at the threads here, see if one matches what is happening to you.

That is why the forum has different areas for different subjects instead of one big dumping hole.

In my case, it was a Chrome addon called Join Tabs. No popups that I noted on ECF, but new popups elsewhere. Oh well, it was useful before it went rogue :(

ETA: Not a bad idea to disable Java. Facebook had a nice little outbreak from a Java attack that was posted to a mobile developers forum.
