We'll soon be upgrading to vBulletin 4.0, the latest version of the forum software we use. At this stage we don't know if you'll see much difference on the surface, although there's a good chance we'll have to use the default template for a day or two (= the page design / layout / colors). Below the hood there are a lot of improvements though.

If you've webmastered / upgraded vB 4 on a busy site then let us know how it worked out?

Would it be possible to host ECF on a Commodore Amiga? Imagine the RAW POWER!! Motorola 68000 microprocessor weighing in at just under 8MHz, a whopping 512KB RAM in the unexpanded configuration and a 880KB floppy drive for all our forum posts!! Optional second floppy drive available for General discussion posts and comes with a mouse!

I hope the update will eliminate the memory leaks of this incarnation. Everytime I open an ECF window or 2 I get memory issues. I checked my system out (hardware guy) and I'm fine, same thing happens on my home PC.

Best of luck!

Got a screenshot of the error? I can't see this error being any fault of ours, it sounds like your java or flash or something is screwing up, but I can't make an accurate call without seeing the error.

If your having a memory leak issue it's highly unlikely that it's the forum software. Sounds like a 3rd party issue. Because this site uses Java I'm thinking that could be the culprit. Try updating to the latest version.

Thanks Timtam and Chris,

I didn't even think of that. I hadn't thought of that... again hardware guy. I'll give it a shot.

Honestly I just get the old "Close programs to prevent loss of data. Windows is low on memory" message when I have one browser open and only one tab of the browser.

I haven't seen that since Windows 3.1. I'll update the Java, a fresh cup of joe solves a lot of things.

Also Firefox has bad memory leakage issues. That's why it's best to restart it every now and then, if you leave it open permanently, eventually it owns all the RAM on the machine.

If you have some sort of memory issue on your machine I recommend this fix:
CleanMem by PcWinTech.com

Set this to run every 15 minutes, it's a background RAM fixer but perhaps more importantly it cleans the file cache, which for some reason is a problem area on some systems and can make a big difference.

It's true that some sites are worse than others, but in the end it's a software and RAM issue on the PC. You can tell how well your PC is set up by going to this site, which is very poorly run and one of the worst in the world for trash Javascript and Flash issues:
www.telegraph.co.uk

Browse through 10 or 12 pages on that site with 3 or 4 tabs open, if your browser still runs OK then your machine is pretty much bulletproof. If the browser locks then depending on how early that happens, you know you need more grunt somewhere.

You'll see fairly soon that compared to that site, ECF is a speed machine... It's true that ECF is slower than it should be but we have a bunch of fixes for that coming up soon.
