most rigs are too far out away from cell towers to allow the phones to work anyway....

Two fold. Some competitors would love to see how others do things. And mainly, security.

The way they "do things" isn't proprietary, they (are supposed to) follow strict safety and environmental guidelines that are laid out well in advance.

The no camera rule is so workers don't record violations, if they become "disgruntled".
It's quite common, not just on oil rigs.
