Youre correct. The Obama administration banned e-cig use on all domestic flights over concerns of the vapor being harmful and the confusion they said it could cause.

Still doesnt stop me from doing a stealth vape every now and then with my hoodie pulled up :)

To me it would be much more the confusion than the health issue although I am sure that played a part. People are already more wary on planes now. Plumes of vapor rising up from a seat could easily be misinterpreted by passengers two or seats behind. For all they know you are trying to light your underwear on fire .... ;-)~ I have stealth vaped on planes. Its one of the advantages of being a vaper. However, I can understand why they don't allow vaping or smoking on planes. They are already a huge petri dish of of recirculating pathogens. No reason to add to the mix. Also too many people crowded together to allow activities that can not be confined to their own personal space. IMHO

Haven't flown since 2004, but the next time I do, will definitely vape, discreetly of course. Airplane cabins are NOT healthy places! Lots of dirty germs in the air and on surfaces, unhealthily dry air. vaping would do wonders to raise the humidity level; hell, they should pay us to vape-and-fly! Plus I would hope the PG in my vapor will destroy those nasty bugs that I'm breathing in...

Well there is a good deal of thought on this subject. Given some of the responses implying that vaping on an airplane is illegal, I decided to do some checking. I pulled this from Cloud 9, and this is their article, by Hillary Miles, (Smoking E-cigs, e-cigarettes or Electronic Cigarette on a plane or Airplane) and quoted:

"According to FAA regulations, smoking a lighted cigarette or anything that produces smoke or flame is prohibited onboard most commercial aircrafts; however, the FAA has not as yet (June 2013) issued a regulation for or against electronic cigarettes, leaving that decision up to the individual airlines. Officially, no airline openly permits vaping; however, it is NOT illegal – it is only against company policy. There is a BIG difference between the two. Company policy is enforced by your friendly (or not so friendly) the flight attendant.

Checking the websites of all major Airlines (and then some), I found only three to date - Japan airlines, Airtran and KLM who do in fact, address the e-cigarette issue directly on their sites. Here’s KLM’s policy-

“All KLM flights are non-smoking flights. Smoking is not permitted at any place or at any time on board our aircraft. This also applies to artificial cigarettes”.
Airtran says -

“In addition to smoking, the use of chewing tobacco and electronic cigarettes are not permitted onboard any scheduled or private charter AirTran Airways flight.”

Japan Airlines posts this disclaimer on their site -
“Smoking is strictly prohibited through out the cabin including restrooms. The use of smoking devices without ignition such as “E-cigarette” is also prohibited as it may interrupt other passengers’ comfort or it may cause the misunderstanding among other passengers. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.”

Unfortunately it is this “misunderstanding ” that stops some airlines from allowing e-cigarette use, not any FAA regulation."

Southwest, Delta and United all prohibit e-cig use, it's published at the back of the in flight magazines.

While the prohibitions against use of e-cigs on some/most airlines may not be FAA mandated, or "illegal" ...not following the directions of a flight attendant can leave you liable for criminal or civil penalties. I'm not willing to risk it.

Anyone ever have those overhead air things on while taking off in a jetliner? The airports are FULL of exhaust. Gag. And they're worried about the air quality due to e-cigs? Really?

Probably more like someone sees 'smoke', then all the call buttons start going off. Most people also think e-cigarette vapor contains nicotine.
If the airline announces there will be e-cigarettes in use on the flight and sells the disposables that would be great.

Of course. If a flight attendant asked you not to do anything, you should comply. I certainly would. Are you in trouble? Probably not if you comply. My first thousand airline flights were really exciting. The next 5,000 a bit boring. I've seen it all including egregious behavior. I have personally been asked to stop doing something, which I was happy to do, and everything was fine. To be safe, everyone should probably not vape on the airplane. I agree and will reduce my stealth vaping accordingly.

I pleaded with the 4 that now vape to just try the e-cig and for a xmas present to me the two girls that I would hound all the time asked me to come outside one day and all of a sudden they both put their e-cigs to their mouths blew out their vapor and brought me to tears and they hollered Merry Christmas Debbie. Best gift ever from them xoxoxoxo. They are vaping queens too lol, and this was two years ago. :)

Yeah, but I was replying (and also quoted) this comment from a stew........
...snip...While she gently admonished me not to vape on the plane, she also told me that the airline's policy is based on the fact that the FDA has not said whether vaping is safe or not.
....snip
So according to her, it was safety. Meh.
