Hello, Folks.

I really like the Ego battery. Fits in the pocket nicely and it's something i've gotten used to. Feels good in the hand too. I've collected a few batteries over the years that still work. Just purchased a charging station for them. I cannot for the life of me though find an ego battery that has a compartment that can be opened (with ease, that is)

Could someone point me in a direction, please. I forget the name of the type of batteries but its those big ones that are typically in laptop batteries. Best reference i got :D

Thank you
Adam

18650 i think they're called.

Yeah, Ego batteries are a particular class of vaping batteries that use LiPo lithium ion batteries. They are not designed to be "opened".

The type of batteries you're apparently looking for are the cylindrical "hybrid IMR" lithium batteries, also known as "external batteries" or "mod" batteries in the vaping community. Once they are spent in a "mod", they can be removed and replaced with a charged battery. These come in different sizes: 18650 being the most popular with vapers, but there are 18350, 18500, as well as 20650/20700/21700/21-70.

For suggestions for an external battery mod, take a look here:

Ego batteries have 14xxx batteries in them. What you might want is a standard mech mod which is what an ego battery basically is.
Really?

Hi Adam,
18650 battery devices are not as pocket friendly as an ego battery.
IMG_2038.JPG

Additionally, you would have a similar AMP limit as an ego battery (~2.5A). (NOT compatible with many/most modern toppers)
What do you use on top of the egos?
Have you considered a side by side unit?
Or perhaps a Pod device?

Cheers

Yeah, Ego batteries are a particular class of vaping batteries that use LiPo lithium ion batteries. They are not designed to be "opened". Once they begin to lose their ability to be charged, they need to be permanently replaced.

I’ve opened up several ego batteries over the years and none of the batteries were standard LiPo bags. They all had metal cases on them. Doesn’t mean they weren’t LiPo of course.

All of the Ego batteries I have opened were LiPo I think, but I haven't opened one in YEARS.

LiPo's can be made in different form factors. Bags, rectangular, and cylindrical.

An 18650 wouldn’t fit in an ego battery to begin with. Too narrow. Ego batteries have 14xxx batteries in them. What you might want is a standard mech mod which is what an ego battery basically is.

Really? Perhaps i've been buying off brand for years then. I'm pretty certain it has an 18xxx something in it. It's not the long skinny egos, it's the fat stumpy egos. Has a 3000mah battery in my current one. I'll be sure to check your suggestion out though, thank you for that! Really looking for something that is cylindrical in form, not those stumpy box mods.

Thanks
Adam

An Ego is a disposable. The outer casing of the Ego IS the outer casing of the battery.
Do not open them.
Yes and no. Are they disposable? Yes. Should you NOT open them? Yes. Is it the outer casing for the battery? Not in my experience. The batteries ARE pressed in there tight and hard wired though. They are NOT worth trying to rejuvenate. Back when I was interested in such things I looked up replacement battery prices and they were basically the same as a new battery anyway. Ego batteries are still available. I haven’t looked inside one in many years though, and it’s really possible they are all LiPo bags these days. Just a bad idea to mess with them.

Battery models are their actual sizes. 18650 means it is 18mm in diameter and 65mm tall, the 0 means it is a cylinder.
An Ego battery is MUCH smaller than an 18650 battery. Egos are only 14mm in diameter.

That is very similar to my own. Battery and all. It's odd though. On the device itself it says ego. Perhaps i've been buying off brands. But the battery you show there is exactly the same as my other ones. I dislike charging them with those screw on usb chargers. Would prefer to just take the battery out, change it with a charged ready for the next day. Can i ask what device that is?

I have deep pockets :D

Those are all what I would call bag batteries. None has a metal case with a negative on one end and a positive on the other. There have been numerous manufacturers of ego batteries over the years so I would be unsurprised if they came in many configurations. It’s sort of irrelevant anyway. Everyone agrees that opening LiPo batteries is at best a waste of time.

That makes a lot of sense. Thank you for that information! Very informative. I'm confident its 18650, think i've been buying off brand for years. Knockoffs if you will.

Thank you

LiPo are always "non-removable" batteries. Their chemistry is the most volatile (flames/explosive) of the battery chemistries, so they can only be used in "internal battery" mods or eGo devices that have protection circuitry. You'll never see a LiPo in a mech mod because mech mods don't have a protection circuit.

Fat and stubby you say... that sounds like the Aspire CF mod.
