My new shiny Ego mod came in the mail today! I was so excited to try it that I actually set aside my long awaited dual coil attys to give it a shot. I grabbed the battery, a Trustfire 18650 2400mah linked below, from the other mod I've been using and attempted to put it in the mod. The battery gave me some resistance, which I assumed was just to the mod being new. At about half way I could barely push it in anymore and still feel safe about doing so. I pulled the battery out and noticed the label had started peeling on either side. Being the intelligent person I am I decided to try again thinking the label isn't that important to me. The battery made it almost all the way in before stopping. I should have taken this a a sign to stop but I didn't. I forced the battery until it was flush the top of the mod, above the threads, thinking that the button cap would place it where it needed to be. This was a bad move. I was able to screw the cap half way down and that's where fun started. The mod wouldn't fire so I gave up and decided to remove the battery. If you haven't guessed it yet, the battery I had to force will most of my might wouldn't come out. I panicked thinking I just ruined $30.00 of equipment. I hit the mod on my palm open end down to see if I could get it out but I could only get the battery to come flush with the top of the mod again. I then proved my intelligence by grabbing a pair of tweezers to see if I could perhaps pry it out. That of course didn't work it only caused a few sparks to come out of the battery and a lovely burnt smell in the air. From there I ran to the garage thinking I could find a tool to pry it out with and when I got there realized all the tools I have are made of metal too and were probably not a good idea. As I was exiting the garage I stepped up to the stairs and figured I'd whack the mod on the stairs a few time to see if I could loosen the battery and was successful in getting the battery out enough to pull it free. The label was shredded pretty bad but still intact so I put it in another mod and it was dead. I was kinda bummed thinking I would have to wait another 3-4 days to get a new battery in the mail until I remembered I could just go to the local vape shop, which I luckily have, and got an Ultrafire 18650 3000mah and it fits beautifully. Lesson learned: If it doesn't want to go in there don't make it!!
Now on to the review. First impression, Ooo, shiny, pretty (I bought the stainless steel model). The body is nice, obviously larger than your average Ego, but feels real good in the hand. The button is a nice large rubber/plastic one which I like as I tend to press hard on them, almost until the point of pain. The button is large enough and the light in it is big enough that I can see it when my finger is on it, one of my beefs with the standard ego is I have large fingers and sometimes cannot see whether battery is engaged or not. The mod has the master on/off switch. Five rapid presses turns the device on/off, which is good as the button is large. You can remove the battery and charge in your charger or screw it onto your Ego charger, which is a bonus. That's about it as far as capabilities go, it's basic, no real bells or whistles. It's a 3.7v device and walks and talks like a 3.7v device should. 18650 batteries have high capacities which normally last me 3-4 days on a single charge with moderate to high usage. The best thing about this mod is the price. I found it on a few sites, either sold as a single unit or separate body and button pieces, batteries and charger not included, for around $20.00. It comes in many colors perfect for "My PV has to match my purse" people, the money conscious vaper or the first time mod buyer. The only cons I encountered, aside the battery mishap, which I blame myself for as the site I ordered it from did warn "Fits most 18650 batteries", is that the threads can be tough. It can cross thread if you are not careful but with the battery capacity you wont really have to fuss much with it. All in all I give the Ego mod a 9 out of 10.
The link below is for model reference only! I am in no way blaming Trustfire for a faulty battery or Madvapes for selling an inferior product. I've religiously used this one battery for over 6 months in other mods and have had no problem with it at all.
