Funny, I was just looking over the "eGo Hate" thread and this one - I think I only found one person who is vocally against recommending the eGo, and that person never suggested what could possibly be a better alternative for someone starting out. So, I think there is not so much of a wave of hatred against the eGo, as one person who is annoyed by it, and probably a host of other things as well. ;-)

Perhaps one or two people suggested saving some money by buying components separately, but how the hell is someone new to this supposed to know what parts they need to buy? You need a starter kit and everything that goes along with it so that you know what you're getting will work out of the box. If manufacturers of fancier devices want the beginners market, then they have to market their products to them in a way they will understand. And they will also have to be prepared for the barrage of emails and phone calls from beginners wondering why an LR atty on a 7 volt mod blasted across the room like a rocket when they hit the button. :)

I SUGGEST BLU!!!!!!11

<hides>

Haha, that one might get some hate.

Nice input here guys, I have just seen too many of these threads in the past little bit that seem to reprimand people for recommending an eGo.

The purpose of my post I guess... was to say that this is a great recommendation and I am living proof. 9 days strong without an analog!!! Had a good craving for whatever reason today and it felt really nice to be able to pick up my Riva and feel really good about myself for not smoking!

That's really what matters, and this thread proves that there are a lot of other folks out here that feel the same way!

I'm new, I started with an eGo, and I do recommend it as a starter device. I've also got a 510 and I like that too but they are very different experiences.

As for all those hating on the eGo, who cares? As smokers we've all gotten the disgusted looks, the sideways sneers, etc. It's nothing new. Don't let it bother you. Get what you like.

People will always recommend what they like and what they are familiar with. What one person likes may, and most often is, very different from what someone else might like so I say just buy em all. :p

I think most of the hating on the eGo is due to a newbie asking for an analog look-alike, and 3 people immediately post: Get an eGo!

I can see it from that point of view, but really, even an analog look-alike is really nothing like a cigarette. You can't easily hold it in your mouth, because the damn thing is not just paper and chopped up weeds. It's metal, you can't really hold it in your mouth very easily. I guess if you put it in your teeth, but that's something I never did with an analog, so never felt the urge with a PV.

Besides, even though the first PV I had was an analog look-alike, the first thing I did was scrape the white enamel off the body and use a scouring pad on the stainless steel to shine it up. I really did not want to look like I was smoking a cigarette. I even got it laser engraved at work with my analog quit date.

No, the eGo/Riva is not a one-size-fits-all, but if you replace "all" with "most", then you're a lot closer.

Thanks for posting this, Stifle! I actually am one of those who recommends the eGo type pv for newbies. And I'm not afraid to do so because of how it helped me. I started smoking 26 years ago. I started vaping last March. I went through every smallish kit it seemed trying to find the cigarette like experience that would help me quit. Well none of them worked, and for me....I hated it. Enough that I was still smoking, a lot. Then I found the eGo in June. Now, to be honest, I still didn't quit completely at this point....but the important thing is that it got me down to 1 cigarette a day if not 1 cigarette every few days. That was amazing to me! That was the turning point for me, the time which I finally realized that this vaping thing wasn't just some short lived fad....that there really was something to this and that I wasn't going to die a smoker! I took the next step and got a mod, because I needed more help kicking the analogs, and I have been smoke free since late August. Now, when I'm in the New Members area, I don't normally say anything about mods because I know how intimidating they can be, unless it is relevant. But my recommendation is almost always an eGo because I know it works for many and it won't necessarily disuade folks from vaping like a silly Blu kit can (no offense to those that use the Blu and love it, as I know it does work for some folks).
All in all....it helped me too, so I also recommend it. :)

The problem comes from not paying attention to the desires of the person asking for help

In the following five scenarios
1) I want an ecig that I can get good prefilled cartridges and I don't want to mess with dripping or filling carts
2) I want an ecig that looks like a normal cigarette as much as possible
3) I want an ecig that is better than my blu I am sick and tired of changing batteries
4) I don't know what I want but I need something to get me started
5) I like my joye 510 but I want more vapor

Only 3 and 4 really fits the bill of the ego, 1 would be better served by going for a kr808 style, 2 would require further questions and 5 would be better served with a madvapes box mod and lr attys as an ego doesn't produce more vapor than a standard 510 it just produced vapor for much longer between charges.

The "ego hating" comes from people saying "get an ego" when someone asks for "a black cigarette style ecig with a blue LED on the end"...which totally ignores the requests. I have seen that happen on the new members forum, I have seen people ask for an ecig that "can be used hands free" and people have said "get an ego"...its absurd

I'm sure ego/riva is great. Its annoying however when its recommended to someone who even states in their post "but not an ego". I mean, that's just slightly doltish. I've seen more than a few posts where this has happened, and the person recommending the ego actually will post later, "sorry, didn't see that" and then add, "but you should get an ego". Its a little crazy.

I don't have an ego, and I'm sure its great, but then again I've been told some juices are wonderful, certain vendors are great and so on so fourth, and they've been wrong as well. Its a matter really of listening to what the person wants, and what they are actually asking.

I bought a Riva 510 when I started a month ago. This was because a ton of people recommended it for all the reasons mentioned above.

I will ALWAYS recommend a Riva to anyone just starting to vape or on the fence!

1) It costs $30 for a kit, pus a few bucks more for some juice
2) It is extremely easy to use, reliable and works very well
3) It kept me from going back to smoking

There are some people that NEED more TH. That's fine to each their own. Recommending some crazy VV mod or Higher voltage mod to a newbie generally scares them. If someone had told me that if I wanted to vape for real, I should go buy a VV, Juice box, Life Changing mod for $100 or more, I would have said F it, and went back to smoking.

What is needed for people new to this is something easy, something simple, and something cheap.

I looked at it like this: $30-$40 gamble on an e-cig is nothing. It's the same cost for me to smoke for 4 days. That gamble paid off.
I did pay $30 for a npro clone from a mini-mart before I found ECF, that although wasn't great, got me through until I had my Riva.

The eGo style PV is agoos starting point You may quickly find you enjoy higher voltage, low resistance, feeders, tanks, lions, tigers and bears OH MY! The vast majority of people will never discover that if they don't take an important first, and inexpensive step. A lot of people find, eGo is just fine for them, and keep going with it.

I could see if your friend let you try their mod and you loved it, you would likely spend the big bucks off the bat and get it. Most of us don't know if we would even like vaping, so the low initial investment is great.

Couldn't agree more...

You know what, I think I am going to get an eGo and try it out, so I can experience it for myself. Plus, if I don't use it a lot, I can pass it to a smoking friend and get them going on something. LOL I've always wanted to play with one just to see what they are all about.

Get the new eGo T (Tank Atomizer) system so you can vape all day without having to carry around a bottle of nic juice...

I've tried them out at vapor meetups, and they are pretty nice.
If I wasn't so happy with what I have, I wouldn't hesitate to buy one.

With the exception of cases where people specifically say they don't want an eGo, you should get an eGo.

All kidding aside, as adults we should already know that all recommendations made are based on the recommender's opinion and personal experiences and gather information from multiple sources to make their own decisions. it's common sense, which, unfortunately, just isn't so common. In reality, a thread on here asking what someone should get makes little sense. Simply searching the forums for reviews or checking out vids on YouTube will give you much more info, and faster, than you can get in a single thread.

There will always be newer and better things. It used to be the 510, now it's the eGo, later it will be something else.

For me. The ease of use, battery life, and performance of the eGo was enough to have me quit analogs the day I got it. Others may perfer a more analog feel and for that I recommend the 510. Either way, both are based on my opinion of the devices and should be regarded as such.
