So last night I charged my eGO-T using a wall charger and within 30 mins I heard a really loud bang, ran into the kitchen and the thing fried. I've done some googling and it seems it's happened to other people before. When I picked it up it was so hot I dropped it. I'm so glad I hadn't left it unattended.

Pics attached of the plastic button totally melted and scorch marks along the side.

I had the same thing happen - mine was the pass-thru attaced to my pc. Melted the button & the tank that was attached not to mention my fingers when I tried to unhook it. The vendor seemed to think it might have been the atty that was at fault - don't know. However, I ordered a Lipo-Saf bag for anything I charge on the wall now & never have anything charging if I'm not in the same room - VERY SCARY!

I've read up on this topic a lot as it originally concerned me greatly. It seems this is not uncommon, but it also seems like when explosions happen, one of a few things are usually present:

1) a OEM charger was not used

2) the eGo was actually not a real eGo battery (there are many knockoffs)

3) the unit was not safely modded

Obviously, this is not always the case and it seems explosions have happened even when none of the three were met, but the majority of the time it appears to be caused when the unit or charging unit no longer meets factory specs.

Personally, after reading up and having seen first hand how friggin explosive these batteries are (and believe me, they are very violent when exploding), I went with the Pila charger and a Provari V2. I made this decision because those two units seem to have the best chances of avoiding an explosion at any point in time, and both work in a manner which actively prevents an explosion by how they monitor the battery. I also only use AW or Tenergy batteries that are purchased through a vendor on here that has a good rep as many fakes are out there, and the knockoff batteries are often dangerous regardless of the charger.

Sailorman what do you recommend for my next one? We live on a boat in the summer which obviously is a really really bad place to have any sort of fire.

I'd recommend a mod that takes separate rechargeable batteries. With separate batteries, you can be sure to get top quality batteries, and a top quality charger. For a charger, I'd recommend a Xtar, as it is priced reasonably. You could get a Pila, but it's far more expensive and probably not worth the extra money.

As for what mod, it's up to you. Whether you want to get into variable voltage or not, is the first decision you need to make. Then, it depends on your budget. For a fixed voltage mod, you cannot beat the Silver Bullet or the smaller Baby Bullet for flawless performance and incredible durability. They are both virtually indestructible. I have dropped my BB overboard in salt water, out of moving vehicles and ran it over with a truck and it still works great. For a variable on the budget side, the new version Lavatube is a good introduction for less than $100. The Provari is the best if money is no object.

If safety is a the biggest concern, the main thing is don't get an ecig that is, in fact, a battery. Their chargers are notorious for failing. They don't always cause a fire, but they're not at all reliable in the long run.

Nickzak... would you mind sending me a message with details of your set up and where you got it? I'm not experienced enough to be able to tell genuine from knock off which is why I went to a vendor in person to buy but I'm really off eGo's now and would prefer to get something like the Provari but don't know where to start with it.

It happens. I don't know how common it is. It's a battery. All batteries have the capability to malfunction regardless of what type it is.

Very frightening though! The only thing similar I've ever had happen with a battery is the soft button got stuck.

Contact the supplier about replacing the charger and battery.

Something similiar to this is pretty handy to have- many suppliers carry them or you can get them on Amazon or a battery supply store-

I second both of theese!

If you want to stick with an (original, branded and protected) Ego, you could charge them with an USB hub....it goes for 10$, it charges more slowly than a fast wall charger and your pc is protected from shorts.
