eGo/Riva "type" models are a good beginner model. Much better than the little battery models that look like an analog and only get about an hours use on a charge. But a better option than the eGo in the same category would be the E-Power. It provides about the same battery life (5 hours) and the same vapor output as the eGo which again, is much better than the small bettery types. But the E-Power batteries cost $4-$5 each whereas the eGo batteries cost $20 each. Plus the E-Power batteries last 5 times longer (lifetime wise) than the eGo batteries. I would not recommend any model smaller than this category of PV. Plus, you can use any atomizer or cartomizer (510, 801, 808, 901) with either the E-Power or eGo:

I've got an eGo, and I'm quite happy with it. Pro's are good battery life, and it's in a 510 connection, which encompasses the large majority of cartomizers/atomizer/accessories you will run across.

I've got the 900 mah eGo batteries. One will pretty much last me all day, and they charge quickly. If I go crazy vaping and run the batteries down fast, I only have to switch batteries once.

The cons?

...

It's not free?

If you buy an eGo, you will be happy with it. Everyone's got their favorite though and you will get suggestions for a ton of different models.

The eGo-T is also one to consider. The main selling point is the large atomizer and liquid reservoir, which some have success with and some don't. To me, the best part about the eGo-T is that they have a 5-click on/off feature which makes them very pocket friendly. Rivas are also great, give you a little higher voltage and are generally cheaper.

I have an ego and about a month ago got the ego booster. It's a cool device that turns your ego batt into a variable voltage device. I won't go into details, but I will say it wasn't very cheap :/ The only thing about the ego and their clones that made me wonder about them, is that the ego booster only works with genuine ego batteries. When I found out why, it made me realize that the cheap knock offs like the riva and others weren't for me. The genuine ego has a special circuit inside it that keeps the voltage at a steady 3.2-ish until the battery dies. The knock offs may start out higher voltage, but as the charge drains throughout the day, so does the voltage. So, with a genuine ego, you'll get the same vape, from fresh charge until it dies, whereas a riva or others will slowly change throughout the day. But people love their cheap knock offs, so much so that I'm sure some people here will say I don't know what I'm talking about and I'm making up lies. So, you can see that if the cheap knock offs have that much of a following, there must be something right with them. Just depends on what you're looking for. If you want to stay cheap, get a knock off. If you don't mind spending a little extra to get something that's made better, go for an ego.

As for the e-power, I did some research on that one myself. It's true, the batteries can last longer than those in an ego. But I've heard people complain about it not being very well made, so that you could end up with a bunch of batteries but no working device to put them into. That's the good thing about having all-inclusive batteries. If the button on one goes out, your backup battery will have it's very own button, no worries. With the e-power, if the button goes out, you **edit** may **edit** have to buy a whole new device.

No matter which way you go, with any of these devices, they all have the 510 threads. This is the most common threading there is. You have a whole slew of different devices you can screw onto the 510 battery. Atomizers/cartridges, cartomizers, clearomizers, fluxomizers, tanks systems, on and on.

Buy a real Joye or Janty Ego, not a clone just called "Ego"

That. I don't think the Ego is just a good beginner model, but the standard all around model. It's all I use and I've been vaping too long to be called a beginner.

My fave is an Ego with the Micro USB port on the end. You can charge it this way, use it as a passthrough, or just a standalone. Very versatile. This would be an example of the battery I use.

I pair this battery with low resistance 510 or KR8 cartomizers. (KR8 will need an adapter).

These batteries seem to last for months. I've only had one go bad, and that was after 6 months of moderate to heavy use.

I use an ego all day. I have 3 batteries. One in use and 2 charged at all times. I use cartos with a drip tip and love it.

That too. Drip tip is essential for me.

I don't understand why the e-power has a disclaimer. "Note: This device is slightly wider than EGO models, and is not compatible with EGO class atomizers/cartomizers or cones." I mean, it is a 510 so why wouldn't the attys or cartos fit?

Maybe referring to these EGo only types of cartos?

"eGo class atomizers" refers to the atomizers, cartomizers and cones designed to fit on or over the outside threads of eGo/Riva devices. The 510 atties will still fit, as they only screw onto the inside battery connection threads. But because the housing on the epower is wider, eGo cones etc, will not fit.

Sorry, I should have said mini-USB, not micro USB above. The Ego passthroughs with the Mini USB are great because they fit this type of connecter which many people have now, even if they don't vape. It's a very common cord to have for phones and cameras to hook to the computer. This means you will have greater access to charging options.

yo 88! I'm not sure if you want an ego as your first PV. But It's kinda bulky and it's decently high powered so your gonna get a big ol' throat hit. If your quitting analogs you might want to consider using a smaller unit and then getting an ego after... my two cents.

I would recommend the eGo SPECIFICALLY if you're trying to quit smoking. I used a couple of different cigarette-looking models for a couple of years, and they were never enough to replace a cigarette. They kinda looked like one, but that's where the similarities ended. Not enough battery strength (weak vapor) or longevity (charging every hour is inconvenient), and the cartridges they used only held enough juice for a few toots. I fiddled with these for a couple of years, and they were only good for keeping my nic fit at bay in places where I couldn't smoke - airports, movie theaters, etc.

Then I got an eGo-T. I put out the cigarette I was smoking to try it when the first battery came off the charger, and have never lit another one. It's been over 4 months now, and I've never even missed having a cigarette. The eGo gives you longevity and enough power to make a serious cloud of vapor with a strong throat hit, and the batteries last most of - if not all of - a day without recharging.

Skip the ciggy-lookalikes, they'll only frustrate you and keep you smoking. eGo will replace your cigs in a heartbeat.
