Hello all istick users:

I've had my istick since mid October, happily vaping away. First, I want to say I have been happy with the device for the cost and am not here to bash this device in any way. I think it was/is quite a mod at it's price point. When I got this, I did what most suggested when the concerns about power regulation were discussed.... I mostly ignored the display with regard to that. I generally build on an Eleaf Lemo in the 1.6 to 2.0 ohm range, so well within this mod's limitations. (Well mostly.)

I read this thread pretty thoroughly before purchasing, saw Pbusardos video on how the power is regulated, and had / have a basic understanding of ohms law. Somewhere in there I missed the fact that this won't regulate voltage down below it's charged state. So off fresh charge, at 4.2v, it won't step down. At least now I know this.

All of that said, I think I may be encountering some wonky spikes in power delivery, if that makes sense. In the last two weeks, I've been intermittently scorching the heck out of juice....but it is very intermittent. Yesterday I heard the infamous rattlesnaking sound while trying to run a 1.6ohm coil at about 9 watts. Charge was a bit low.

I'm not even sure that I can describe all the weird symptoms but one is that my resistance readings have been going wonky as well. Previously the stick was varying usually by 0.2 ohms, but now it seems will vary 0.4 ohms. It's especially wonky when breaking in a new coil...but that isn't new. It's just the variance has increased. I don't think it's my atomizer / build. It certainly could be, but I'm doing nothing different on my builds really. I suspect the device due to the other symptoms going on.

I don't have a lot of test equipment. I do have a very cheap DMM that has terrible accuracy for resistance. Not sure but I think the voltage reading is ok, but I don't really have a way to test the voltage output on this without an atomizer on it.

Sorry for the very long post. Anyone want to chime in and give me their opinions? Is the chip in my battery taking a dive? I suspect it's now spiking voltage where it hasn't before. It hasn't been dropped or anything new recently. Just acting crazy, and I have scorched a lot of FULL Lemo tanks , so I've wasted a bit of $ in juice.

I'm now setting the power, ALL the way down. If I trust the istick display I am vaping a 2.4 ohm coil at 4.9W (3.4v) with plenty of vapor. I built this atty at 2.0...and am confident of that. I'm aware it's probably putting out 4.2 volts......and maybe by keeping the settings very low I am avoiding the power spikes I think I am getting.

Lately, I can be taking a draw for 3-5 seconds, and it seems like I suddenly get a huge voltage spike near the end of my draw. All the sudden I hear sizzling at the end. The vape tastes fine in the beginning then suddenly gives me a horrible burned hit at the end.

Anyone else had theirs start acting similarly who's been using it a while? Should I stop using this? I think I am still safely operating within the limitations of the device but wasting good juice with lots of scorching has be about ready to retire it's use.

Hi Bored2Tears- When I first received mine all was fine for the first 2 weeks. then I had the same problem you are having. How I fixed it was to run watts all the way down, take a hit, then run watts all the way up, take a hit, then back to your sweet spot. It worked fine after that.

bigbob2322 is not the only poster to have success with this fix. Let us know if it doesn't solve your problem.

Do try what the others have said. however, when a connectivity issue exists, and for whatever reason your resistance changes, so does the voltage to your atomizer, if a device in power mode (watts) sees an increase in resistance (ohms) it changes the voltage in an attempt to match the setting.

So if your build is 1ohm, and suddenly the device sees a change above 1ohm, say 1.6 ohms, the device will increase power to compensate for the changes. Fluctuating resistance could be caused by a loose, or faulty coil, or it could be a poor connection in the voltage path, which may include the wire to the 510, dirty 510 pin, 510 pin pushed in to far, not allowing a solid connection to the atomizer.

It could also be caused by the atomizer itself, I had issues with a Kayfun 3.1, even though the base was tight, must have been some minute oxidation built up, cure for that was taking it apart, clean it up, and lightly sand the base to clean up the oxidation.

EDIT: After reading the described fix, of varying the power, minimum, to maximum, honestly, it sounds like an issue like I described, intermittent/poor connection between the device, and coil. Increasing the voltage to maximum could cause a slight bit of arcing creating micro welds to the poor connection.

I've got an iStick 30W coming in today, black. I'm interested in checking out a Heatvape Defender 25W too (the black peacock one especially), but they are a little higher priced and less available for now - unless you want to pay using PayPal to an overseas source. For those that have got the silicone cover for the iSticks, how do you like them? I'm curious how thick they are, and how much extra "girth" that adds to an iStick? I like batteries with a surface I can grip, or at least not so "slick" they always slide out of my hand and get dropped. The iTaste V3s with colored plastic finishes work well for that kind of grip compared to their metal versions. I was also thinking a straight black carbon fiber skin might be nice too - thinner, still has some grip, but not all that much extra protection. What do you think, or are most of you happy with just a "naked" iStick?

I have a silicone cover for my eGrip and I couldn't be happier. I LOVE IT. It is not bulky at all, and the only thing I notice is that I LOVE the color and the improved "gripability" that the silicone cover affords. I want to buy 3 of the silicone covers for the istick - that's why I'm not willing to pay $8 each on ebay. Whenever they hit sweet-vapes or vapenw, I know they will be priced around the $3.75 mark. Since I want 3, I'm willing to wait a little longer for a lower price.

Vendors are price gouging accessories. The wholesale price for the silicone skins is under a dollar.

I got my first scratch on my new iStick already. It was strong enough to expose the silver under the black coating. Really ugly to me .

I would consider getting the silicone case too, but I know it's just going to be one of those cheap ones that attracts the heck out of lint. Maybe an actual skin would be a better idea.

Looks like Rocky Mountain Vapor sold out of a 30w istick kits too. I believe this ebay seller I used to buy from has them in stock on their web site. There's a 15% coupon code they keep sending me in my e-mail. It kind of annoys me that they would use ebay sales to get me on their mailing list though. I think the company is called Kanvape.

In other news, I think I'm getting used to the voltage on the 30w, and it seems fine to me. I have noticed everything everyone else is saying though. The button rattle, how it feels kind of warm sometimes, and it feels kind of hollow compared to my 20w. Not that any of that matters really.

I tried the suggested varying watt settings "reboot" .......and all I can say for certain is that the resistance reading isn't fluctuating as wildly anymore. I think that has stopped altogether. And, yes, I understand what you're saying that it will adjust the voltage to compensate even though my resistance really isn't changing.

I'm not entirely sure yet that the reboot process has fixed my problem, but it appears to for now. I will watch cautiously and report back.

I did get one dry hit since then, but i believe it's due to my chain vaping it........and it wasn't the best wicking job I've done. The scorching of liquid has stopped . Yesterday the device with Lemo atop was running pretty darn good after the reboot.
