EMail notify not working?

Is there any known reason why email notifications might not be working?

Is it relative to having a gmail account?

I've had issues in the past with gmail accounts. Many moons ago, I used my gmail account to receive important server messages. Then one day, I stopped receiving them. Come to find out, Google was rejecting them even though the server was configured correctly. They weren't even hitting my spam folder. That's the day I kicked gmail to the curb as a primary email.
