The Board of Health dropped its push to eliminate electronic cigarettes
because they had not seeped into town yet but on Wednesday,
they were asked to reconsider.

Not the banning of sales to minors thing ...
Just embarrassing article due to the demonizing language
coming from an uneducated BOH Nanny group swimming
in their little power circle.

"because they had not seeped into town yet"
"They are being sold like candy in this community"

This is NOT an important article

OMG....
"They're purchased like candy. They are being sold like candy in this community," Harrington said. "We need to take action in educating people and get them out of our community."

And then, about people not picking up dog crap...

This hits the top 10 of stupidity for me of articles referenced here on this forum.
Still, someone needs to educated these people....good gawd.

Not sure if I get this right. Is he saying he wants educated people out of the community? After going through all the trouble of educating them? And them still not having seeped into town yet? I thought Dutch politics was bad, but you guys beat us by many miles.

Isn't the sale of products containing tobacco or byproducts to minors already illegal? Don't understand why they thought they needed a law specifically for ecigs. More cluelessness, sigh, contribute to casaa, move along I guess.

There is no tobacco in e-cigs. That's why the FDA doesn't have the authority (yet) to regulate and tax them to death. That's also why there cannot be a federal ban on the sales of e-cigs to minors (only state and local bans). The 1997 federal law only pertains to tobacco products like cigarettes and cigars.

As a former high school English teacher, I am compelled to point out that the usage error you discovered is problem of pronoun reference.

"We need to take action in educating people and get them out of our community." In this case, the noun that the writer intended to reference with the pronoun "them" was "e-cigarettes" mentioned in a previous sentence. As you discovered, you can get some rather humorous results when you read the sentence literally instead of intuiting what the writer really meant.

My mother used to drive me crazy with missing pronoun references. Example: "We had a luncheon today, and she said that..." She? She who? In this case, the pronoun would refer to a person that had not been mentioned at all during the course of the conversation.

Thanks for this reply - I'm very ignorant on the finer points and need to do my homework - I figured they could regulate it purely because it contains nic. Much like another plant whose derivatives are as illegal if not moreso than the plant itself. Apples and oranges in terms of laws and regulatory agencies I know, just thinking in terms of principles. Silly of me, I know...:)

Too bad nobody is picking up after Harrington at board meetings.

Liked the post a lot, but it got me to thinking. Who's picking up for the deer, rabbits, geese and other wild species running wild (not to mention the flying assortment of birds). This might qualify for pandemic status.

As a current English teacher, I have to say that you guys made me LMAO.

Well, then Sam, you will probably appreciate how my heart leaped (or leapt) in my chest when I saw the subject line of an email from our Homeowner's association: Lost Kid's Bicycle.

OMG, I thought. Some poor kid has disappeared and the only clue the authorities have is this kid's bike.

When I opened the email I read:

It was reported today at the association office that a small kid's red "NEXT" bicycle was found over on the Newington Forest Ave. bike trail [near the elementary school]. Please contact Rob to claim your missing bicycle. --

Talk about misplaced modifiers!

Clearly all the educated people have already moved out.
