What is the life span of the disposable evod coils? I have been using mine heavily for around 1week and today noticed it tastes..... Weird... Cant really describe the flavour im getting but definitely not like the juice i have been filling it with.... The little silicon bits (wicks?) sticking out dont look burnt or overly brown or anything... Is it time to replace? Do they need cleaning? I read a bunch of stuff about 'dry burns' and coil maintenance but no idea if this applies to my cheap coils or is for your fancy homemade stuff...

Forgot to add, vapour production is still great, this makes me thing its not the coil thats the problem? My starter kit came with 5 replacables so ill try replace and come back here when i get home..

I would replace the coil. Beware of Kanger coils. I have bought 3 5 packs of the replacement dual coils for my PT3 and everytime I get at least 2 coils DOA.

The other thing you can do is disassemble the entire coil and run warm water over the wick let sit and dry. Rebuild and see if it works any better.

Evods are all I have ever used so far. In six weeks I have not had to replace anything.
I do give them a good cleaning and a dry burn every couple of days. So far so good.

I'm here, when I'm here
I've used evod coils for about 5+ months now. Sometimes, there is not a physical sign, externally, that the coil is bad or becoming "burnt" tasting. Like umidontknow said. Remove the rubber grommet and carefully pull the chimney off. The flavor wicks will look dirty but the coil will look dirtier. If you're vaping sweeter liquids, coils have the tendency to "gunk" up quicker. Check out YT on dry burns but be careful. I've fried a couple of coils.

Good luck and Happy Vaping!! :vapor:

There are a couple good video's on youtube that show you how to clean these atomizers. I'd get you the links but I do not have access from work :(

pbusardo has one i'm sure where he reviews the EVOD tank and how to rebuild them.

What I typically do is this:
- slide off the silicon cap
- wiggle the shaft back and forth to pop it off
- remove the 'flavor' wick and set it aside
- rinse the head under hot water
- dry it off with some paper towel
- with the atomizer attached to the base, screw it on to the battery
- fire the battery and you will see the coil glow red hot for about 5sec
- blow off any burnt particles and fire the battery again for 5sec
- repeat until the coil looks free of gunk and the wicking material looks white again
- put the flavor wick back on
- snap the shaft back on
- slide the silicon cap back on

hope this helps

Tried the dry burning... Still tastes like ..., i did not however pull the flavour wick out... Doesnt look burnt or anything but back to being white.. My flavour wick seemed overly small compared to the youtube video i watched? Maybe this is part of the problem?

Changed the coil... Paranoid it still tastes like ... but i dont think it does, the pull seems alot tighter now i changed it though?

Is it worth keeping the ... tasting coil to try and fix later? or are these dead now and belong in the bin?

Thanks guys, bit of a learning curve... I have an itaste vtr coming before the weekend so im sure i will be back with more questions about that :D

I never get more than a week. I know it possibly seems like I must be some vape addict (what with hardware and posts!) but I'm a light vaper, just not a pathetic volts/watts vaper to protect my coils.
Dry burning can sometimes do the trick beautifully, but not guaranteed.
It's a week... it's 20p a day. 1 ... out of a packet is 40p.

Ah. the problem is definitely the wicks. From what i understand i was tasting burning wick and that is why the smell was the same on the 'dry burn'...

Aslong as the coils still fire, should i keep hold of them until i learn about re-wrapping and wicking?

Cheers :D

Definitely keep the old coils. Rebuilding them is wicked easy once you get all the stuff to do it.

I use:

- Micro screwdrivers: to wrap the coils on. I use the 1.4mm flathead from a Stanley yellow handle walmart set I have for Kanger coils.

- Nail clippers: easy way to cut wire

- Kanathal A-1 resistance wire: I prefer 32 gauge to make 2.3 Ohm coils but others use 30 or 28 gauge.

- Sterile cotton balls: in a box from the first aid section for wick.

- Bernzomatic micro torch: to preheat wire before wrapping to take the springiness out, then to heat the coils before install to tighten them up. Bic lighter works too, just not as fast or as well.

- Needle nose pliers: To pinch and hold the coils as I heat them of course. Some people use tweezers.

- MOST IMPORTANT - Something to check Ohms with! I have a Multimeter, Little black box Ohms checker, MVP2 and a Sigelei Zmax that can all check ohms. You need to ensure there are no shorts and have a Ohm level that is safe to use on your battery.

That's all the tools I use to rebuild!

Edit: almost forgot! I also rely on an android app from the google play store called "Vaper's Toolbox"! It gives you an idea how many wraps to use to get the Ohms you want plus some other functions. Wicked easy to use and works great! Plus it's free and was made by a member here, ScottP!

I usually can get a weeks worth of use on them before they gunk up. And that is chain vaping fruits.
A good day long soak in vodka is what I give my Evod's and MT3's each weekend. After I soak them I run them through the ultrasonic a few times, let them dry and they are good as new.
I can tell it's time to replace the whole thing when I start to taste burnt silica and they are only lasting a few days.
As long as you clean them regularly they should last a while before you have to replace them. I personally don't have the patience to rebuild, so I just buy the Kanger replacements for them.
