And if it hasn't been said, one of the positives I told my job, when getting grief about mine from hr, was that if people who smoke see it, and start vaping it will save lots of money in health insurance..

She then told me, you can do it until someone complains... No one ever has...and I vape inside to my hearts content...

LOL! Good joke, but if one is chemical sensitive, it can make one sick. I was in an industry where I had to visit vendors that produced soft PVC's, and another who produced rubber "O" rings. It's not just an offensive smell. it actually makes me sick. I can't be in the same room with a roll of scotch tape. Certain perfumes affect me the same way.

Well I am a vegan ( I am not but wish i were ) and am extremely offended everytime I smell a brand of perfume that uses animal testing. I also cannot tolerate fur or leather to be worn around me. And all those that eat flesh at their desk ? Fugetaboutit !! :))
Just saying .... the only reason we are in the doghouse and able to be discriminated against like this, is because the World Health Organization and it's counterparts have decided way back in the '70's to make the smear campaign against smoking and in turn vaping.
They have been very successful. I wish I could find the link back to their annual conventions where they state exactly how they were going to end smoking.

So I spoke with my line manager who witnessed the 'discussion'. She congratulated me on how I handled it and said she was ready to back me if I needed it during the interaction. She hasn't heard anything from the station inspector so as far as she's concerned I can carry on vaping inside if I want. Vape win.
I'd still exercise caution. Your line manager may be ok with your vaping, but her boss(es) might not be aware of the difference between vaping and smoking.
The manager who had issue with your vaping(whom I will refer to as "Cranky") might not be able to get anywhere with your line manager, but it's possible that "Cranky" could go over her head and complain to someone higher up the ladder(assuming there is higher than the inspector), which could result in both of you getting flak you don't deserve
