I did try burning the gunk of an atomizer that was hardly producing any vapour.....and I kept getting plenty of foul smelling smoke from it....then after a while I would wash it out and give it another try...it never got any better so I kept doing longer burns...and never finding it worked any better....I could never even see a red glow from it even though it was giving off all the stinking smoke.....eventually it went cold....and when I took it apart it was no wonder I couldn't see any red glow, it still had a load of black gunk coating it even after all that burning!!.....That's what made me give up on the idea of burning it off.......but perhaps this idea of doing it from brand new will make a difference.

Pete and all--I again tried the heat method--I am glad some report it works for them--but giving it one more try on 3 801 atomizers--it fires them for me and kills them. All using 5 volts--which is a load that it should handle--the last ones I did at 3.7 Volts yielded the same results all at very short burn times--10-15 seconds---So, at least for me--I am dismissing this method. I am glad to hear that some have reported sucess--but would like to see more followup----Thanks again---Sun

Sun - it only claimed to be good when used with new atomisers / from new. Is that what you tried?

If they are already gunked up, they are likly to blow-out.

Kinabaloo--My last attempt was on 3 new 801's all used one day--so I just do not see this as a viable method. But if it works for some that is great. As for me, they burned to contacts right off the coil----Sun

Hi Sun......I am sorry to hear about your luck with this idea....it's still far too early for me to give any verdict but I think this is now my fifth day of 'burning' my coil for a few seconds of red glow at least threee times a day......and so far fingers crossed....it's still working fine....it is obtaining a red glow a bit quicker with my new 5 volt mod but still vaping great. .....5 good days with one atomizer is doing well for me. The only thing is that I am not doing a burn for anywhere near as long as you tried.....10 to 15 seconds seems way too long to me..I just keep the button pressed until I can see the red glow and then at the most give no more than three seconds......possibly much less because I really start worrying about it breaking the wire once I can see it's glowing that hot.

It's strange. Unless your power suplly is extra powerful it's hard to explain.

A toaster runs red hot for ages, and although the nichrome is thinner in an atty, it should be able to run dull-red hot ok. Hotter than dull red might be too hot and cause the solder joint to melt ??

If it is reaching bright red, yellow or white (eek), maybe the solder will melt or the expension force is too great or there is a structural change in the alloy that makes it brittle.

Pete - seeing the red glow clearly - suggests the coil is keeping pretty clean :)

You'll soon reach a new personal best ;)

Notce any signs of burning off - smoke, noise,... ?

Hi Kinaba..all I am getting is a tiny wiff of smoke for the very short burst of red heat I give it...but it's surprisingly smelly ..I noticed I could even smell it in my bedroom last night. As you say it does seem to suggest that the coil is keeping relatively clean though. When I once tried burning off an already gunked up coil I was never able to see any red glow....but I could hear plenty of hissing and crackling and lots of stinky smoke ......until it died.

Same as I was getting, smoke smelling bad and then a nice glow.

My old faithful atty died last night eventually.

That's a real pity, but we all gotta go someday.

I am wondering if you have the chance and time to open it up to see how it failed ultimately - wire broken or solder joint loosened, or ...?

That would be interesting. We know a way to jump the fence only to find a second fence, a second limiting factor. Wire deterioraton, solder joint deterioraton, or something else?

I know exactly how it broke.

I spuck a pin down the atty hole to line up the meshes and ****'d it up :)
