Faulty Ohm Meter - Repair?/Toss

A few months ago I got one of these ohm meters to check the coils I build. I have been quite happy with it. It is easy to use, doesn't take much space and consistently measures within .1 of the readings I get on my multimeter.

Today it has gone crazy and is reading coils from .11 to 5.7 - coils that read 2.2-2.3 on the multimeter. Even the same coil will get different readings in that range. If nothing is attached it does read the l that is expected for no reading.
I replaced the batteries to no effect.
Is this thing dead or is there anything else simple I can try? At least I have the multimeter to use instead.

try cleaning the threads and center post with alcohol or contact cleaner. If cleaning doesn't help. Toss it.

Cleaning did not help. Readings are still random.
I did find that if I place a coil in a base and then put that in upside down in the center hole of the kanthal wire spool I have a nice solid base to use the multimeter.
