I'm of Finnish ancestry on my fathers side. My grandfather immigrated to the USA just before WW I. My father was born here but as his parents learned English they insisted the family speak the language of the country in order to assimilate. My father stopped speaking the Finnish language when he started attending school in 1927. Unfortunately he, and therefore I, lost that part of our culture. I do have a distinctly Finnish last name though.

Nice to have you here Kent. Have you been to Finland?
No, I've never been there. I still have relatives there, but I don't know them. My brother went about 10 years ago and met some of our great uncles though.

There are a lot of Finns here in the US. Most live in the northern part of the country. My family lived in the states of Minnesota and Michigan. The climate is similar to that of Finland so the immigrants felt more at home in this area. My grandfather was a Lutheran minister, schooled in Finland. One of his brothers was the editor of a Finish language newspaper in Michigan during the 1920's and 30's.

It would be nice to connect with relatives in the home country. I'm sure I have a lot of relatives that I don't know about. From what my brother told me, many Finns now speak English as a second language. Since I don't speak the Finnish language, that would make it easier to communicate with people if I decide to visit in the future. Perhaps when I retire I'll be able to go.

That sounds so familiar! I have a friend whose father was an american of finnish heritage and a lutheran priest. He then visited Finland and got married with a finnish lady who moved with him to Northern US. They moved to Toronto, had to kids and divorced when my friend was seven years old. The kids then moved to Finland with their mother, without knowing any finnish. My friend still, after 30+ years, speaks english with her mother and her brother. Obviously she's fluent in finnish by now :)

You're right about the knowledge of english: most finns speak finnish, swedish and english. Many speak a fourth language aswell; usually french or german, sometimes italian or spanish and nowadays increasingly also russian.

Ego-T: varsin pettynyt. 3/6 atosta maistuu kakalle, vaikka mitä tein ja lopuissa on todella laimeat höyryt.
Bulli-Elite A2-T: Uusin kokeilu.

Eipä mulla muuta tälläkertaa... Kettu kuittaa!
