Just took the plunge on vaping and it's okay so far but nothing exciting. Been lurking here a couple years so I know somebody will be able to help me figure this out.

For my first setup, I went with a Kanger EVOD VV and Mini Protank 2. Stock coils are 1.8 ohms and the little instruction thing that came with it says suitable voltage for the 1.8 coil is 3.1 to 3.3 volts.

Flavor and TH are fine, but I'm a little disappointed with volume compared to some of the videos I've seen. I also want the vapor warmer than I'm usually getting. If I crank the EVOD VV power up as far as it goes and wait an extra second or two between button push and inhale, it's better. That's basically just shortening the coil's lifespan, though, isn't it? Should I get 2.0 or 2.2 coils instead?

Everything else is pretty much fine, I just want warmer and thicker vapor.

For juice, I'm using Alien Visions C&D and also got some Boba's Bounty while it was on sale (both 12 mg). Starting off with the C&D while I let the Boba's steep a little and I think I'll probably order a second Mini Protank 2 for it while I'm playing with this first one.

As background, I'm pretty weird on smoking. 20 years, varying from a half to 3 PPD of everything from Marlboro Ultralights to Marlboro red 100s, Newport 100s and even Pall Mall unfiltered (which are far less harsh than the filtered Pall Mall reds, IMHO). For most of that time, I smoked Marlboro Lights shorts. Switched to 100s when prices started going bonkers, then Special Blend Gold, then Special Blend Red, then Marlboro Blacks then whatever I could afford at any given time (Blacks, L&M Red, Pyramid Red, Newport Red non-menthol, Newport Gold non-menthol).

Even when I was smoking a couple packs a day of Marlboro Lights, I'd still pick up a pack of Camel Lights or Newports or something every few days to mix it up a little. It wasn't uncommon for me to keep 3-5 different kinds of cigarettes laying around at any given time. Most recently, I've started getting Marlboro Gold and Red 100s again because I knew I was switching to vaping soon and figured I'd splurge a little to get the good stuff before waving goodbye to analogs.

I'm also weird because it was no problem for me to cut back to a half PPD. I can go without smoking for five days without killing anybody, but I feel like I'm not as sharp mentally (probably because of the dopamine hit). Cutting back to a half pack a day actually made me enjoy it more because I could get a nice little buzz again instead of just doing it to keep from getting cravings.

Since I can and have smoked just about everything, I think I'll actually like vaping better. But for that to happen, I need me some hotter vapor. What do you think is the best way to go here?

I have been too with my Kanger EVOD Starter Kit and 1300 Vision Spinner. The Spinner does better when boosted to around 4.4v. What I have found makes the most difference is technique. A lighter steady draw creates more vape. Seems counter-intuitive, but works for me. Give it a try.

Sounds like you need more power to get added warmth. An MVP 2 would be a nice upgrade. Just ordered mine last night.

Actually I don't find you weird at all. I have been smoking cigars for past 15 or so years and never settled on a specific brand or type. My smoking has always been about two or three events a week. After moving to Cali three years ago and finding that cigar prices were about 40% higher than mid-west and east coast I started smoking pipes since tobacco was cheaper and did not have to worry about staleness experienced with the over priced cigars. Again soon after I started I had probably twenty different blends on hand. Long story being shortened... Now like how the vape thing is developing as I am finding great flavor and a much cleaner experience.

I personally recommend the anyvape davide bdc tank. more vapor and warmer than a PT imo. they can be had for around 13-15 bux.

I'd thought about trying a Kanger Protank 3 to start, but went with the Mini partly because of the sleeker fit on the EVOD and partly because I found a kit deal. Is the Davide BDC ego threaded or 510?

Technique is turning out to be a much bigger variable than what I'd anticipated. You can vary that a little with a cigarette, too, but small things don't make such a big difference.

MVP 2 might be a possibility at some point, but I'm not crazy about the box form factor. I love the EVOD because it's sort of a cross between a mini Maglite and a hookah. lol

I generally have a second or two between pushing the button and inhaling - I generally press the button as I'm bringing it up to my mouth - it gives the coils a chance to get fully heated before inhaling. I also agree with one of the other posters that a slow, steady inhale technique works well.

As far as volume of vapor compared to what you see in youtube videos, depending on the equipment they were using, you probably won't achieve that with your set-up (which is a good starting out set-up). I think that in a lot of the 'big cloud' videos, they have chosen specific equipment and coil builds, and have fine-tuned everything for the result they want. One non-equipment thing that can affect vapor production is the ratio of PG/VG in the liquid - higher PG is said to produce more TH, while higher VG is said to produce more vapor. If the vendors you order your liquid from allow you to choose or specify the PG/VG ratio, you could see if increasing the VG percentage a little bit improves vapor production for you.

A lot of this is just trial and error, between liquid ratios, and trying different setups and tweaking what can be tweaked, and choosing what types of performance to go after as you go into more advanced setups and mods.

Good luck!

AVE juice is all VG, which it's my understanding produces the most vapor at the usual sacrifice of TH (but AVE is known for having uncharacteristically good TH for VG and I do find that to be the case).

I've vaped far less often today than I usually would have smoked, partly because I'm getting a little raw/scratchy feeling in my throat when vaping. What's up with that? I do drink plenty of water.

I battle with raw/scratchy throat every day. I at least a gallon of water a day. If I could just get over the throat issue and :vapor: as I would want I'd be happy. I have been seeing this for a couple of weeks now, maybe 3 so I don't think I'll ever get over it. I am doing 80/vg 20/pg I think it is.

I wasn't happy with the evod or Minipt2 until I started rebuilding the coils and using cotton. So much better now. You'll need an ohm meter kanthol wire, cotton and a few other things but to me it was well worth it. You tube is full of videos for doing this. I plan to get better equipment but I still plan on using the evod and miniPT2 only because of the coils and wicks I can make now.
