(Florida) First ban on College Campus

Bob: thanks for correcting that (first college) I was going on what the article said.
This, I fear, will only be the first consequences of our classifications in the tobacco category. I strongly opposed it, and still do. But for the life of me, I really don't see how it's either; legal OR moral, for them to ban tobacco use in our own private vehicles and homes.
And to ban things like snus/snuff/etc... As you so nicely pointed out, you sat there and held an entire conversation with the president of the campus, whilst using your tobacco product....But how do they EVER expect to enforce that?? Do they plan on looking up my nose??

There's lax enforcement of anything other than smoking. No Tobacco Gestapo walks the campus to check mouths. But some of us remember how the ban on smoking began -- and this is similar, but will include all nicotine. Users will be shamed into compliance, forced out of "decent society". They did it to smokers; they'll do it to all users of tobacco or nicotine products. Eventually, majority acceptance comes. Rebels move on.

BTW: The college did this to become praiseworthy. No other reason. Just lots of attaboys from anti-tobacco types who demand a tobacco-free world in a decade or two. There is no science behind the ban.

well i might wind up going to what USED to be MCC. i'll just tell them that the nicotine in this could have come from tomato leaves for all i know. then proceed to ask if they have a tomato ban.

Well, to counter that move at UF, I am glad to report that almost all the Hospitals in and around Tampa, especially the VA hospitals in Tampa & St. Pete, are allowing the patients to vape. Even the Nurses & Doctors are buying e-cigs.

i know this is an older post, but figure I'd chime in as i just found it and i was on campus at UF visiting some friends in Gainesville about a month ago (while i was still smoking).

I personally was unaware of the smoking ban for the first few days I was there until one of my friends brought it up in such a nonchalant way that i almost thought he was joking (apparently all the students see the ban as a joke as well, and he only knew about it because he read the article about it). I smoked all over that campus over a several day period and never had one problem, even having campus cops within nose-shot several times. Seems to me the ban was imposed more for appearances than actual intention. I mean, how can you let students binge-drink on campus before/after football games but say you can't light a cig or chew tobacco?

anyway, that was my experience: several days of smoking all over the campus and not a single mention of it to me. not even any noticeable dirty looks by students or faculty. and many other people seemed to be smoking as well without any fear of reprimand.

We go to all of the home games and took my daughter and one of her friends to a game a couple weeks back. Going into the stadium they had the girls open her purse and there sat her cigarettes-out they went. They made her throw them away. No going back to the car to put them up as we were already past the ticket scanners. I warned her before going that the campus was smoke free and that she should use one of my pv's. I stealth vape at the games-not pushing my luck in getting a pv taken and trashed!
There is an alley like area that was for smokers before the ban and it really makes me mad because people are always still smoking there. Heck, I can smell it, so I know the attendants/security can, too. Come on UF, either it is or it isn't smoke/tobacco/nicotine free. I don't care which just keep it real.
Oh, come on Gators, time to get back on track!!!!!! GO GATORS!

yeah, i can't imagine they actually threw out her cigarettes. although smoking is banned in many (most) places in this country, there is nowhere that i'm aware of that they are actually considered contraband or where simply possessing them is banned. i think i would have told those girls to take a hike or pay me $6.50 to go buy a new pack.

Yes, it is true. She was so mad and it almost ruined our time together. She pitched a fit for the first half of the game. I did buy her more when we got to the very first store we came to. I actually told her I did not want to hear about it, she whined so much. I did warn her and she did not listen.
