The diameter of the screwdriver that I'm wrapping around is 3mm. But my problem is that what I wind up with is, essentially, just a little slinky. NOT a tight sorta....cylinder. I'm just doin' it wrong. Probably in lots of ways that I'm not even realizing. It happens. I'll just keep at it and eventually something will click.

Is that a typo? You are getting measured 5 to 7 ohm coils with 30AWG Kanthal wrapped 7-9 times? That would require a diameter of about 1/4 inch.
