While windows 8 may be a problem for some ( perhaps a "radical change" is a nicer way to describe it?) , this thread is more about helping people that have bricked their computers.

The last thing we need to do is rekindle the operating system wars. Like it or hate it Windows has a huge market share and many people are "stuck" using windows because of hardware or software choices (or software requirements).

Not everything works in bootcamp /WINE/ Cedgega / [insert windows emulator here]

It seems that whenever a windows update contains a bug that may impact the performance of certain third party software or driver, the news shouts out for everyone to uninstall it. Updates are important as they contain patches to correct security vulnerabilities. As long as system restore is turned on ( it is by default unless a member of a domain with a group policy governing certain settings) you can always use it should a windows update ever "break" your system.

Considering System Restore can break even more things, using it as a panacea isn't a good idea, either. System Restore should be a last resort option (if it's turned on).
I used System Restore today for the first time on this 4 year old laptop because of a failed Windows Update. I've tried and tried to download and install the Service Pack update for Windows 7 and it just is not happening. I've also had another update almost shut down my pc before I could get rid of it.

Windows can be pretty frustrating sometimes. :grr:
