If you need a second line you won't use a lot or if you only need what they offer for free as your main line, then all you have to do is buy an approved phone. They offer only 4 phones on their site ranging from a $99 LTE phone with specs good enough for most people, up to a $400 phone. Or you can buy these phones off ebay, possibly find a new one for like $40 but it's a $20 activation fee when not buying one of their 4 offered phones. You can also find the offered phones on ebay for more than $20 less than going through them, sometimes save like $80 if buying a phone they want $200 for.
These are the Sprint branded phones you can use besides the 4 they offer on their site:

-iPhone 4, 4s, and 5
-HTC EVO 4g
-Samsung Galaxy S2, S3 and S4
-Samsung Galaxy Victory LTE (Make sure to include device's ICCID when activating. Click here for more.)
-LG Viper 4G LTE
-Samsung Epic 4G
-HTC Evo 3D
-Samsung Nexus S
-Motorola Photon 4G
-HTC Evo Shift
-HTC Evo Design
there's a page on their site to activate the phone if not bought from them, and you can check your existing phone's ESN or possibly serial # to see if it's compatible because they add new phones all the time.
It uses Sprint's network like Virgin mobile, and I think Tmobile and Boost, which has good coverage in most areas.

1) $19.99 a month you get unlimited everything but data drops from 4G/LTE to 3G after 1GB used.

2) For $6.67 a month, you get unlimited talk and text and 500mb data, must buy the whole year for $80, but if you run out of data, you can buy another 500mb for $10. When buying each plan for the first time, they often offer 2x the data for the first month, and then your $6.67 a month servie will continue the next month. Or you can buy $19.99 for unlmited everything if you go over the free amount for that month.

3) for $10 a month you get unlmited talk and text and 500mg (same as buying the whole year for $80).

4) for %100 free, you get 200 talk, 500 texts, 500mg 4G/LTE data, but if you go over, you can buy one month of $10 unlimited talk/text and 500mg data or $19.99 for the month and get unlimited evertyhing.

There's really no catch. The 4 phones they sell through the site are obsolete and they probably got for $5-$50 each and then charge $99-$400 for, but you can buy them off ebay much less and pay the $20 activation. They have no brick and mortar store overhead. $19.99 a month unlimited everything with data droping to 3G after 1GB of 4G/LTE is better than the cheapest else I found was https://republicwireless.com/info/plans/ unlimited everything but only 3G offered. Elsewhere like Boost/Virgin mobile, you pay like $40 for unlmited everything, so freedompop is just depending on high volume of customers and low overhead to make priofit. Customer service is good. The website is kind of buggy and can be hard to navigate though.

the phones they offer suck, a lot don't have LTE or 4G, and are just like 1.5 dual core with a gig or RAM. You can find them used for like $30 though some of them. Better off getting the $119 Samsung Galaxy Victory LTE they offer pre activated (no additional $20 BYOD charge and you know the SIM card is compatible). Better phones should be available eventually.
