Fender as far as I can tell, the reason isn't really about wicking as it is about getting the wick through the hole into the tank easier so it doesn't bend or get stuck when inserting from below. Sturm did say that air will replenish in the tank easier if the wick is longer, but I haven't noticed a difference with that, just sticking a bit into the tank is working fine for me.

I've tried both ways and have found no difference in wicking.As asdaq said,it does make it easier to insert the wick through the hole into the tank without kinking and bending it.
Been Mia for a bit, and finally found this thread... Im not sure where Im standing right now , as the dates of posting I have missed.. all the way back to 10-19-11 and on due to traveling, vacationing.

Can someone PM me Dan's PayPal email address? I know I saw it as I read through ALL 43 pages. Now, of course, I can't find it. I need to send my payment but I don't want to get the e-address wrong. That would be bad. I've got the total and all of the info that Dan needs per the CoOP thread, but the e-mail isn't there or I'm overlooking it after reading this entire thread for the last hour. It's quite possible that it is the latter.

You can use kanthal or nichrome, size is just different resistance per meter.....mesh or wick material of choice....totally up to the user.
I would suggest the new users do some research before jumping in to a co-op. I would hate to see this get held up because people didn't know what they were getting in to.....
