Ok, I need a little help wicking my GEM.

I've seen all the posts on technique with lots of packed cotton in the coil and not much if any in the channels. I had this technique down with Ni200 28ga making 7-8 2.5mm wraps. My first 3 builds were perfect.

Last night I must have wrapped 6 coils using the same method, every time I tried to wick it the coil got destroyed or pulled of the posts while trying to twist the cotton through the coil.

I tried rolling the cotton as long & thin as I could, even wetting the cotton to get the end through, nothing worked effectively. I love the GEM but being limited to a 2.5 diameter coil can be a pain to wick sometimes, 3mm is so much easier!

Any tips???

Hi everyone!
Friend of mine bought a GEM (original) and was pretty happy with it, so he decided to buy a couple of clones at FT, too. The problem is the clones are leaking as if there's no tomorrow, not only after refilling, but also while operating - unusable at least.
Now I for myself am done with this, mine flied to the trash, he on the contrary would like to adress the issue and suspects the orings to be of the wrong size, given the nature of the atom's malfunctions.
Hence the question: anybody has an idea of where to purchase an oring kit? Spare parts? Browsing through european shops I couldn't really find anything, any suggestion would be appreciated.

Thanks! :)

I haven't built with Ni200, but maybe this helps:

I watched Q's video before I bought my GEMS. The issue I have is specifically with threading the cotton without destroying the coils or probably more specifically yanking them off the posts. I might need to try wrapping the ends of the coil completely around the posts instead of hooking them like I usually do all all my other RTAs.

I'll figure it out :thumb:

EDIT: I did have a few 'pops' last night, so I wasn't as gentle as I was my first several builds that were easy-peasy. Going to try a few different things tonight, including having a drink after build time

have you tried rolling the cotton (or rayon) and then as youre passing it through the coil, twist it like a screw while keeping the wick tight at both ends with your fingers. you should screw from both ends using your index fingers and thumbs. hope that helps.

Q is using Rayon, not cotton. Rayon shrinks after break in, unlike cotton which expands. Are you using cotton? You don't want to stuff cotton in like you would rayon.

Are you using Sally's Rayon? If so start with about half of the strip for a 2.5mm coil. Maybe pinch just a little off or slightly stretch it. Roll it up and pull it through until you feel a little squeak/friction.

What type of cotton are you using, pads, balls? I have not had any issues pulling a slice from a pad double the radius of my coil.

Tried wicking again Thursday night and had no issues switching to rayon. Looks like the Japanese cotton I had been using got contaminated by some type of condensation & became brittle. Switching to rayon was back to easy peasy.

After vaping well Thursday night however, now it appears I'm having the 510 issue on my DNA 200 that jazzvapor & h00ligan were having. Resistance jumped way up to .3 or above at times (on a coil that originally read .09) & never came back down, even after adjusting the pin or resetting the resistance on the dna. Moving the Gem to any other mod, no problem, although it still read much higher than it did initially.

I may have to stick with the Erlks & STMs on my boxer mod for now. The GEM is obviously not DNA 200 friendly.

Any idea if the 510 pin weakness are being addressed in v2??

I have a Sweet Spot TI .4 build on my gem. Came out to .26. I am using it on the DNA 40. It jumped around when I first built it. Enough that even though it was locked it asked me if I changed my atomizer. But I tightened down the connections and screwed the pin out a bit and its been set for days. It has been locked, but it's not changing enough for the 40 to ask again. I even rewicked last night and it's still the same. I have been leaving the 510 base on the device and just screwing the Gem into it. Ever since I started doing that, no issues. At least for me.
