I've never seen nic printed as a percentage, but 12mg nic is 1.2%. I can't equate that to a cigarette, but if the juice is satisfying your needs, then stick with it.
I've seen it both ways but your math is correct - above poster is not.
From what I have heard that 12% = 12mg

Also I have heard cigarettes are somewhere around 18mg but I guess no proof of it. Don't mark my words on this thou.
12mg/ml is the same as 1.2% nicotine.
A 30ml bottle at 12mg/ml has 360mg of nicotine in the whole bottle (30ml x 12mg/ml).

Hi Sam, welcome to ECF .
If you look more carefully your bottle probably says 1.2% not 12% .
Most vape juice has the strength expressed as mg/ml. This equates to parts per thousand. All liquids have a different weight per volume so for scientific measurement mg/ml is more accurate.
For our purpose the liquids that make up a finished vape juice are close enough to the ratios of water ie. 1 litre of water equals 1kg. 1ml equals 1mg.
12% equals 120ml/mg.
People who mix their own juice and buy nicotine in bulk buy a solution at 5% or 10% . They then dilute down to their requirements, normally between 0.2% to 2% . Or 2mg/ml to 20mg/ml.
Now is the time we wished we paid more attention in school.
As to trying to equate levels of nicotine to the levels in cigarettes .
That's kind of like asking how long is a piece of string .
Most new vapers will start on about a 9 or 12 mg/ml liquid . A lot depends on the device and how you inhale .
There really is no fixed equation.
Finding what works for you is going to be a certain amount of trial and error .
Good luck.
Ask any questions you have .

Me again.
What I mean is you have to find what works for you.
If your supplier says it is 8mg/ml nicotine then that will have been carefully measured.
What is unknowable is if that will be right for you. If it is too low you will not be satisfied, if too high it might be unpleasant.
See how you get on.

24mg/ml
Although exceptionally rare, there are instances of up to 48mg/ml e-liquids, but generally, 24mg/ml is the highest nicotine level you will readily find. This strength is suitable for tobacco smokers who consume multiple packs or in excess of 40 unfiltered/full-flavored cigarettes a day. (NOTE: Halo offers a 36mg/ml unflavored liquid that is most commonly used by experienced vapers who want to customize the strength of their e-liquid.)

18mg/ml
Here we encounter the most common class of e-liquids, where the lion’s share of tobacco smokers begin their vaping odyssey and many existing vapers find their “nicotine comfort zone.” If you smoke 10 to 30 full-flavored or regular blended cigarettes per day, and prefer a medium throat hit, we suggest vaping with an 18mg/ml e-liquid. It’s also common for vapers to eventually taper down from 18mg/ml to lower nicotine strength.

12mg/ml
We suggest this level as an entry level to those who smoke around a half-pack of cigarettes a day. It delivers a good balance of flavor and vapor production with a mild throat hit.

6mg/ml
If you’re not a heavy smoker, under a half-pack of cigarettes per day, we recommend a 6mg/ml e-liquid.

3mg/ml
What used to be thought of as the ideal strength for those who drip their e-liquid, 3mg/ml has become increasingly common with the influx of powerful sub-ohm devices. If you prefer ultra-light tobacco, we recommend beginning at 3mg/ml.

1.5mg/ml
Just a few years ago, if you asked for 1.5mg/ml you would most likely be walking out of the vape shop empty-handed. With the increased popularity of vaping, and this being an industry based on personal preference, vapers who weren’t ready to drop from 3mg/ml to 0mg/ml demanded a happy medium. This level offers supreme flavor and vapor production with an almost non-existent throat hit.

0mg/ml
E-liquid doesn’t have to have any nicotine; it’s the ideal option to wean off nicotine for those who prefer it. Some just enjoy the many e-liquid flavors themselves. An e-liquid containing zero nicotine offers optimal flavor and vapor production, but typically has no throat hit. This presents a perfect opportunity for e-liquid sampling/testing. The absence of nicotine allows the user to experience the true essence of flavor and end their nicotine dependence. In addition, vapers who have tried to cut down their nicotine use can still enjoy their favorite e-juices.

I copied this from the Halo website.FYI.

It's complicated but we understand.
There aren't any 8mg cigarettes (well, maybe in Turkey) but 20 cigarettes of 0.4 mg would be a yield to a tobacco company robot of 8mg in a day.
Truth is, smokers manage to get more nicotine usually with harder pulls or even unconsciously covering filer holes.
Anyway, 8mg is well short of the 18mg many smokers used a few years ago. Depends on the power (watts) of your device.
