You know that you can change your privacy settings on FB, right? You can even take yourself off the search and limit who all sees your status updates. I think a lot of the "privacy scare" was from ppl who didn't read what FB put out there to explain their new settings and just got scared off or started posting nonsense. They may have changed your settings temporarily, but it's nothing you cannot undo.

Except for the fact that FB clearly states in their Terms of use that they have every right to everything you put on FB without any need for permission to sell for marketing purposes. I did manage my privacy settings that they had... but its the fact that they release all rights you have over your information like your address, phone, name, and all posts. That is what made me quit.

So does every other website you visit....you say "release", i dont think that is the correct term

they own the data on their servers.

they release some data, it is aggregated to a point when it is no longer personal information anymore.

You think google will be better? Google (who I am very fond of) will divulge much more info to 3rd parties then Facebook ever will.

Any personal, personal, info would never be given to a 3rd party by Facebook (or google, or any major company) Things like your full name, email, address, number, etc. are not to be worried about.

they will however fork over aggregated data for help with marketing and research, analysis, etc.

You haven't really dipped into it to deep. Let me pull just a couple of things out of the terms of use for you that might enlighten you.

You hereby grant Facebook an irrevocable, perpetual, non-exclusive, transferable, fully paid, worldwide license (with the right to sublicense) to (a) use, copy, publish, stream, store, retain, publicly perform or display, transmit, scan, reformat, modify, edit, frame, translate, excerpt, adapt, create derivative works and distribute (through multiple tiers), any User Content you (i) Post on or in connection with the Facebook Service or the promotion thereof subject only to your privacy settings or (ii) enable a user to Post, including by offering a Share Link on your website and (b) to use your name, likeness and image for any purpose, including commercial or advertising, each of (a) and (b) on or in connection with the Facebook Service or the promotion thereof.

The following sections will survive any termination of your use of the Facebook Service: Prohibited Conduct, User Content, Your Privacy Practices, Gift Credits, Ownership; Proprietary Rights, Licenses, Submissions, User Disputes; Complaints, Indemnity, General Disclaimers, Limitation on Liability, Termination and Changes to the Facebook Service, Arbitration, Governing Law; Venue and Jurisdiction and Other.”

Facebook in short is saying they own you forever even if you want to delete your facebook. Any idea why a social network would want to own your data forever? I don't know why they would need or want to. Unless they are... evil.

And one more thing here is a direct copy past of google's picasa terms of use

"9.4 Other than the limited license set forth in Section 11, Google acknowledges and agrees that it obtains no right, title or interest from you (or your licensors) under these Terms in or to any Content that you submit, post, transmit or display on, or through, the Services, including any intellectual property rights which subsist in that Content (whether those rights happen to be registered or not, and wherever in the world those rights may exist). Unless you have agreed otherwise in writing with Google, you agree that you are responsible for protecting and enforcing those rights and that Google has no obligation to do so on your behalf."

That sounds more like my style... Google = Respectful Facebook = Hateful

What goes on Facebook that is so private? "I watched a beautiful sunset with my honey tonight," "The kids and I spent wonderful day at the park feeding the ducks - pictures attached" or "I have a new baby cow on Farmville!" Please...not like this is not a mater of national security, and nobody really cares anyways.

I don't get this whole hysteria about privacy and identity theft. I have to agree with the brother on The Drew Carey Show "You want to be me? You want my identity? Fine, take it. It comes with bad credit and a police record"

Just my PMS filled two cents worth on the subject.

Who here quit facebook due to privacy changes? I know I did. There are rumors that have been confirmed that google is releasing a full blown social network similar to facebook. I'm going to sign up right away due to not having a social network home except for here. Anyone else excited to hear about this?

Apparently in the Terms & Agreements (or w/e) they can legally sell your photos to other companies. For example one guy was put on a dating website advertisement, and his wife believing that he really joined ended up leaving him. However, it was the work of facebook that had sold his photograph..

I don't know if you've seen the video on youtube "Googles Master Plan" but that freaks me out more than facebook. I won't be leaving facebook though, I'm kind of already "out there" so my cover is already blown. I just have to stop posting photos of me making out with Ronald McDonald statues. (I'm not making that up, I really did do that.) But I DO not like the idea of google of knowing everything about me- so I try to use other search engines when I remember.

The documentary Google Me, is amazing in my opinion.

The keywords are up there.. SUBJECT TO your privacy settings..

That means that YOU have a right to change your privacy settings to only give FB access to or no access to your information.

IMO, if you put it on the internet, it's public access!

There is a box in the settings to click to keep this from happening... It seems it must have been a PEBKAC

Someone who did not read the bulletins...
