Okay, not everything, the ohm reader is due to arrive tomorrow.

But I should just go for it and wrap a coil, right? It can't be that hard?

Right?

I think you should. Use this Steam engine to figure out how you want to build it. http://www.steam-engine.org/coil.asp?r=0.5&awg=26&id=2 Input your wire size (awg), target resistance (.5 ohm or whatever you choose), and inner coil diameter. Then click the mouse anywhere on the page and it will update if it hasn't. It will tell you how many wraps you need. The rba on the subtank should already have a coil in it (.5 ohm). You could start by wicking it if you wanted. If you haven't watched a you tube on how to coil and wick I would suggest that first. If you have seen it done, go for it. :)

Okay, help!!!!

I wrapped a coil that should have measured out at .8 ohm according to steam engine, and it did! Yay me!

Until I wicked it and filled the tank. Now it measures 1.5 ohm. What????? Help!!!

I haven't fired it yet, I'm kind of afraid to since it doubled and I don't know why.

ETA: I fired it, and it immediately went to .9 ohm. So, closer, so good.

But what happened?

They sometimes do that in my experience. What I usually do is a quick as I can fire on a new coil if "everything" looks good when I build it. Once you get an ohm meter you'll build with confidence. and CONGRATS!

Make sure your coil screws are tightened down well BreilaRose. Resistance going up that much is IMO likely caused by a screw being slightly loose.

There's only a few possibilities, one of which is the 1.5 is accurate. Does the reading change if you use the up or down power NOT the fire button?

It is still measuring .9, on the up or down as well, and it seems to be working fine. I've got to play with the wattage, as I've been using the .5 premade coil for the last week or so. I was using the 1.2 OCC coils before that, but they kept leaking. So I'm kind of looking for somewhere in between those and the .5. Does that make sense?

Right now I'm at 20w with the .9 I just made and it is ok. But I'm not the best judge of flavor right now because I seem to be coming down with a head cold, so I'm trying to take that into consideration (and not say F it all, I'm going back to cigs!)h

I think you're doing great and you will find the coil sweet spot. Look at the bright side of all this... that coil can last months, just dry burn it when it gets gunked and put new wick in. Plus it's so cheap to rewick or even build a new coil you can do it anytime you like. Independance. Saving money! Comfort!

A moving reading can be common when you mount a new coil.

Here are some situations:
1) After mounting the coil there are wraps that are unevenly touching causing the resistance to change. Known as "hot spots"
Work them out by pulsing the coil. Put the rod back in the coil and wiggle it a bit, don't fire obviously. Pulse and pinch until satisfied.

2) Sometimes mounting screws can become loose.
Put the rod back in to stabilize the coil as you tighten.

Things to watch out for:
1) Make sure the wick isn't too tight otherwise you can distort the coil and cause hot spots.
2) Make sure the coil and leads are not touching anything.

Otherwise it sounds like you did fine. Don't be worried if the reading is off by 0.1, most devices aren't that accurate, but will provide a decent reading. A new wick takes a little to break in as well. After sometime you'll find what you like best as far as coil qualities go such as the gauge and coil ID.

I see you have 26 and 28 gauge. If you like working with those you may want to try some 27 gauge. It's very easy to work with and not as springy as 28.
