GP Paps X - How to keep the finish \ re finish

Hello folks !
Im new here on ECF and i thought my first post would be about my Paps X.
I recently purchased a second hand paps and it has some wear and tear like you would
expect. Nothing deep just minor scratches from coins and keys by the looks of it.
I have polished the button and the afc ring and they turned out pretty good.
But for the main battery tubes i tried using 600 grit sandpaper and it turned out kind of good.
Slightly semi polished \ matte.. But i want to have the finish as close to the original.
Should i use a lower grit paper or is there anything else i can do to make it less polished \ more matte ?

Cheers
Andreas

Maybe i explained poorly.
The AFC ring and the Button i have polished with 1000 - 2000 and then 3000 grit and it turned out great.
But for the body i want a matte \ flat brushed finish.
I used 600 grit to remove scratches and it turned out brushed but with a slight polish to it.
If i want to make it more matt \ flat but still keep the brushed effect what should i use next ?

I gave it a go with some wet 400 grit and that gave me the finish i was looking for.
Now i only need to make it more matte, think i will use some fine steel wool like you suggested to tone it down.
I see on the picture i have been sloppy and have to do the button again.. meh.. well thanks for your help :) Much appriciated :)
