interesting....

Some growers contend their tobacco concoctions are safer than commercial products, which have a stew of additives ranging from colorings and oils to ammonia.

“The quick answer to that is no,” said Thomas Glynn, director of cancer science and trends at the American Cancer Society. Glynn knew of only one study of the health risks of homegrown and commercial blends — and it concluded no difference in safety between the two.

I planted 1 plant in early June, and it's about 4 feet tall. I keep hoping for flowers and seeds, but nothing has happened yet, so I'm not quite sure what to do with it. I've read some of the tobacco forum posts, but I'm still basically at a loss. Can I just break some of the bottom leaves off and dry them and see what happens with them?

There's been interest expressed here about growing your own tobacco. Some time ago, I joined the grow your own forum and now the Associated Press has taken note of this as a trendy movement among smokers. Good story.

Some smokers start growing tobacco | Tobacco Facts.

Saw this on Fox News. Not to shoot you (or any of my esteemed colleagues) down TB, but they make a good argument about the difficulty in doing it right. Mold probably kills more newbies (or at least causes more health problems than it's worth) for those who dabble in a science they know nothing about.

With the internet, many people read an article or two online and fancy themselves experts in something that true farmers spend generations to master. Judging by your tenure here I'd guess you're smarter than the average bear and would invest the time to hone the craft. Just saying that not everyone would exercise the same diligence.

Growing tobacco isn't exactly the same as buying a hydroponics kit and a copy of High Times.

It's still worth it to buy some seeds..a hedge bet..sorry I couldn't resist the pun! Why not give it a go? Mold is faily easy to see on a tobacco plant, use a good herbicide..a non toxic one. Try a plant or two see how it goes, if it proves to be too hard..what have you lost?
I don't want them for smoking, I want them for Nic extraction. besides they make nice foliage plants.

Mickey, I just tried to find some threads for you..there are a bunch! Go to the top of the page on the blue bar look for seach. Drop it down and type in Nicotine extraction...you'll get a lot of hits. There are some hard ways to do it and some easier. I need to learn a few too!

Mary - thanks, nice tips. I was prepared to write off the idea but TB and you have me intrigued... I think I'll give it a try too.
