Australia day is the anniversary of the first landing of captain cook at botany bay and declaring the continent as a loyal subject of Britain .... pity they didnt tell the indigenous tribes about it , could have saved a lot of heartache.
So its basically the birth of Australia as a colony.
We dont need an independence day cos we were far enough away for them not to bother us too much lol , we just gave em enough **** til they left us alone !!

Oh and its over now , cos we are a day ahead ( jan 27th now here ) but thanks for the thought LOL

Personally I agree with Mick Dodson (Australian of the Year, and Indigenous leader) that Australia day should be moved to a date that is less insulting.

An insulting date? How? Why? What ? Where? Excuse my ignorance. By the way, wasn't it the people who are now Australians who beat the indigenous people into submission, rather than the English? The English often get a bad press because of colonialism. The only difference between us, the Spanish, the Portuguese, the Dutch and many other nations at that time in history is simply that we were better at it. Oops - got a bit political there...

I went to Australia 3 years ago. Melbourne, Sidney, Cairns, Cape Trib and McKay Reef. Loved it and met no-one who wasn't great. So no offence meant - just a regional difference, perhaps..
