So, the probe just popped off of the positive lead of my cheap harbor freight multimeter. Should I trust the seemingly accurate readings I get from the exposed wire?

That probe is just an extension of the wire itself, those readings are just as accurate.
It's it not under warranty find an alligator clip that uses a small screw post to hold the wire.
Replacement probes at HFT for $2.99. And the meter comes with it at no extra charge!
Gotta love HFT..... You can find some really useful tools there and cheap. They won't last forever but they are cheap.
Harbor Freight it great for buying some tool you use once a millennium, or to experiment so you don't break the bank. Anything I use constantly I don't buy from HF.
I like their cheap wrenches, they are great for making specialty wrenches for those one of jobs, just get out the grinder and torches and cut/grind/bend/twist to shape, without ruining a good wrench.
Also great for people that are always "borrowing" your tools. If my HF wrench doesn't come back, it's not a biggie. If my Craftsman or Snap-on tools disappear.....
that multimeter is often free with any purchase on coupons in the papers and toss away ads
I gave my next door neighbor a HFT drill so he wouldn't keep borrowing my Milwaukee.

Seriously, the wire end is no issue. Pick up a new set to solder on from radio shack when you get a chance.
Actually, yours might unscrew and expose the end so you can re-solder it. I just fixed an Old Analog meter the other day. positive wire popped off.
