Saw an article, one of many out there, on CBS.com - scare-mongering at best. They didn't even have a link to the study paper, let alone any of the data represented (and couldn't even spell "diacetyl"). I did a quick skim of the actual paper, and the one thing that kept jumping out was an emphasis that they chose flavors that would "appeal to teens" because of their names and sweetness. Hmph. Sounds like they dressed up the report to make the media splash for recognition.. Sad, really.
Unfortunately, these are the kinds of studies that get the most attention. Not the ones based on fact.
Gotta keep those kids smoking real cigarettes!

I wish someone would define a list of "teen" flavors and provide arguments why those are "teen" flavors (hint, the list would have 0 members). I'm 25 and i prefer sweet/desert/custard flavors. My father likes chocolate cake. My 30+ friend likes bubblegum and cotton candy.
Should we all be vaping tobacco and coffee because everything else is a flavor designed for teens?

No, as respectable adults over the age of 18 the only flavors that can appeal to our sophisticated pallates are tobacco.

I plugged their results into a spreadsheet. 38 of the 59 flavors had measurable amounts of diacetyl, which equates to 64.4%, not the "over 75%" represented in their summary. Five more had detectable amounts of diacetyl but not in quantity to be qualified. The other 16 fell into the "Not detected above the laboratory limit of detection (LOD); 0.05 ug". Nor is there any stated qualification in the study that states the acceptable limit of exposure for diacetyl or the other compounds being tested for.
"We tested for fish fecal matter in the lake and found measurable quantities" doesn't necessarily equate to "it's not safe to swim in it".

Just smoke these and everything will be fine. Reading this watching the morning news with my coffee and guess what happens to be the next story coming up...

I don't see these articles as a bad thing, i just see it as a means to make people more aware of the concerns and potential for harm so they can make a more informed choice as to whether they wish to vape flavors or not. Flavoring is optional and not necessary to vape, so folks that vape who may be concerned by this are more then able to do further research on the matter and make up their own minds about it. Many vapers are not even aware of these chemicals so articles like these that raises these concerns gets the word out and prompts awareness.
Bottom line...I always hope that those who are vaping juices with these chemicals in it are well aware of the concerns and potential of harm that have been raised so at least they know upfront the potential risk they may be taking.

From various researches i have read, there doesn't seem to be any question about whether or not these chemicals are harmful in the eyes of the medical community, it's a question of at what level does it become harmful especially when vaping it. We already know that vaping these chemicals reduces lung function according to Dr. F after conducting some respiratory test...so that is already established by one of our own researchers.
I say let folks make up their own minds on how they feel about the research that is out there...but let's keep awareness as the main priority so they can make an informed decision.

I think society over the many years has seen and experienced through someone they know the god awful dangers of cigs. They have seen the commercials with those used as examples of what cigs did to them....or lost someone or has watched someone they know suffer from it's consequences. I highly doubt most people believe that vaping is worse then cigs...i just find that hard to believe unless they are extremist just looking for something to oppose. Hell, we have pro vaping extremist who are just as bad....but those extremist on either side are the exception to society as a whole, not the norm.
Just my two cents....i just want vapers to be aware so they are vaping based on all the information to decide for themselves.
I am seeing this as the beginning of the public process of what's to come regulation wise. That's all I'm saying.

First off; I'm a full-time vaper. Anyone who has interacted with me on this forum should know that. I have been since early February of 2015
With that being said, I don't think these people who conducted this want to destroy our industry. I really don't. I do think they want to get a nice fat article in the New England Journal of Medicine as being the 'first ones' for a breakthrough study on the hottest product since the Opti-Grab.
The politicians & lawmakers will be the one to destroy the industry, using studies like this one as ammunition claiming it comes from Harvard (....).

Vaping is not some cool thing being positioned to replace bubblegum or Koolaid for little kids. It is not GOOD for you and nobody should try to position it that way. Smoking is terrible for you and vaping is almost certainly better for you than smoking IMO.
My kids (19 and 20 - drinking age is 19 here) went to the liquor store a few months ago and bought Snapple brand "coolers". Yup. Actual Snapple with 5 or 7% alcohol. The can looks just like Snapple. This product isn't targeting kids but fruity vape liquid is? Crazy.
