i noticed a post about this a few weeks ago and i did some trial and errors with them and i will be honest...and this is just my opinion...being a noob, we haven't quite gotten the "taste" down for when the carto is dry and burning up. i had 4 extra carto's laying around that i had used up and planned on filling...i filled 2 up with only a few drops and puffed away till i got that "burning" taste and and took a few more puffs. then i filled 2 up regularly and vaped those like i normally do (just until the flavor starts to weaken) i pulled apart all 4 carts and found that when i would go past that point of dryness it left a little hole in the filler, when i stopped vaping when the flavor really cut out with them i had no results of burned filler. i personally use the cartos from V4L. i don't know if its particular companies or cheap cartos, but the ones i use, i really think its more puffing these cartos past that point where they are still wet. its just my personal opinion but i really think that they are only burning because they aren't moist anymore.

I use cartos; there is no filler burning. Just like you stop when the car in fron of you stops, stop vaping when the vapor flavor fades. I carry two with me, and refill them both every night. They don't take much to refill, but that's also because I don't vape them dry.

But the official answer is probably something like:

They're intended to be discarded (for me it's after about the time it took me to smoke 7 to 10 cigarettes), to begin with. They're only a dollar something a piece. (yes, atomizer and everything)

There totally IS filler burning (in the cartomizer I mean).

I got curious and took one of mine apart and sure enough - burned filler. Not stained with brown gunk or whatever like the juice that gums up your atty, the filler was actually quite white and pristine, just had a brown burn hole in one spot.

That being said, I am more careful about making sure I don't vape them dry anymore. But I also am not going to give up on them either - I like the convenience of them and, really, I've had worse junk in my lungs... I'm not terribly worried.

Even vaping burned carto filler might be safer than smoking cigarettes.

It certainly does. I've had both the polyfill that comes in 510 carts and PTB melt and singe, and I've had all four 510 attys I've owned get that "burnt dog hair" taste in less than a month from burning the wick.
As far as I'm concerned the burning wick issue is resolved.
No, it does not burn in the 510 atomizer.

As far as the filler material goes, I have NEVER had any filler material burn, singe, melt, or anything else using my 510 atomizers. I have used the standard polyfill and the blue foam. I have also never seen anyone, whom I believe knows what they are doing, claim that they had any filler material burn. In other words, I don't believe it.

I believe there are many people who THINK they have had the polyfill melt and stick to their atomizer, and I believe these people are simply twisting their cartridges and getting the filler material snagged on the bridge and they just THINK it melted and stuck to it.

But since there might be credible claims (other than yours) of filler material burning, melting, or singeing under normal operation with a 510 atomizer that I may have missed, I have "asked the experts" to see what they have to say.

Here is the thread: http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/ask-experts/89922-can-wick-burn.html

So it remains my contention that the 510 atomizer will not burn, melt, or singe filler material under normal operation. And until the same can be said for cartomizers, I would not recommend them to new users.

Of course, for me personally, I only use them if I absolutely must.
Filler material of any kind detracts from the flavor as far as I'm concerned.
:)

Easiest way not to burn your cartos is to put them in a tank so that they always stay wet.
Almost every vendor now makes tanks, and they will pay for them self with the cartos that you don't throw in the trash.
    J-TANKS

    side note:
IMHO more noobs will trash really good atties with carts going dry than they will cartos.
And, an atty costs 5 times what a carto costs.

I see so many people recommending cartomizers now, in spite of the burnt cartomizer filler issues.
So I have to wonder, have they fixed that now?

I could never, in good conscious, recommend cartomizers to anyone new as long as that issue exists.

Echo-e's don't burn, the flavour drops off then you refill.
