AND THE MORE YOU KNOW: Sen. Lam claims "Banning the sale of flavored cigarettes contributed to the steep decline in smoking among teens," but the "contribution" was next to nothing. Most popular cigarette flavors, by far, w/teens in 2009 were "Marlboro" & "Kool."
From 2000-09 pre-flavor ban, HS smoking dropped 28% -17.2% (1.2 percentage points per yr). From 2011-19, HS smoking rates dropped 15.8%-5.8% (1.25 points per yr). Hardly a "steep decline" since the ban, but rise in HS vaping seems to be accelerating not reversing the decline!

NASSAU, NY: (UPDATE) Nassau County legislators voted unanimously Monday to ban the sale of flavored electronic cigarette products.
If the bill is signed into law, most flavored vaping products will not be allowed to be sold in the county.

THE MORE YOU KNOW: Students fire 40-60w & 55-70w unprimed atomizers at 200w, claim vaping exposes consumers to carbon monoxide. According to shop that says it sold the professor replacement atomizers during study, researchers had burned away part of the wick and charred the cotton.
NEW YORK CITY, NY: (UPDATE) City unwisely voted today to ban all flavored vapor products except tobacco flavor.
Vaping advocates understandably jeered and threw dollar bills from the balcony of the City Council chamber after the vote.

ANTZ ANTI-LOGIC: Teens are spending $30/week on vapes for the bubble gum flavor instead of $1 for real bubble gum...so ANTZ tax vapes, because teens are "sensitive to price increases."
Also, the gateway claim. Teens "vape for flavors," but for some reason will move to cigarettes that taste like...tobacco smoke. Of course, if you ban vapor products....

Reminder of Jersey City, NJ Call to Action! Illinois headline reflects general media bias against telling the truth about lung injury outbreak. Heavily-smoking Bangladesh bans vaping. Palo Alto, CA has neither a teen smoking nor vaping problem, but still considering sales ban. Bernards Township, NJ believes teens buy mainly from vape shops, so only banned vape shops.

If you ban all soda except diet grapefruit flavor, then tax soda at 75%, how much revenue would you expect? And claiming teens vape for the flavors makes as much sense as claiming they drink beer for the bubbles.

TWISTED RESEARCH: Typical Stanton Glantz study--focuses mainly on adverse effects and important questions/answers are not made public. What was risk for never-smokers who vaped, as that would show risk that completely excludes previous smoking as a risk factor? Are dual users at higher risk because they're heavier smokers, so their risk is already higher due to greater exposure to smoke and it's more difficult for them to completely switch to vaping? How long did they smoke vs vape? Were people who had been vaping longer at less risk than those who only started recent to the study? These are important factors that are not disclosed by the researchers--likely intentional omissions, considering Glantz's consistent false attacks on vaping over the past decade.

Congress gets closer to federal Tobacco/Vapor 21 law. New York City and Nassau County, NY ignore most recent data and pass flavor bans. Lincoln, Nebraska and New Hanover, North Carolina deny businesses choice to cater to vapers.

FEDERAL: (HEADS UP!) Tobacco/Vapor 21 law passed Tues. in the House as part of federal spending bill. Bill must pass Senate by Friday to avoid partial shutdown. Law would take effect 9 months after president signs. Of course, ANTZ still want flavor bans.
Don't forget that Hawaii raised to 21 back in 2016. Yet, they had the 2nd highest rate of high school vaping in the nation last year. There's little to no evidence that raising the age will reduce teen vaping. However, some research suggests it may actually raise teen smoking.

TOBACCO/VAPOR 21: (UPDATE) It's come to our attention that the new law denying adults 18-20 access to safer alternatives to smoking became effective IMMEDIATELY nationwide. It seems earlier reports of "up to 9 months" referred to FDA updating its final rules, however, FDA states the law was enforceable as of December 20, 2019.
According to a statement by the National Association of Convenience Stores, "While there are unanswered questions about when FDA plans to enforce this requirement and whether the agency can legally enforce it before updating its regulations, retailers should be aware that FDA views any sale to a person under 21 as a violation of the new law."
Therefore, while some states may hold off enforcement until FDA finalizes the paperwork for the new law, that does not necessarily mean vape shops will continue to sell to adults under 21. CASAA recommends contacting your state tobacco enforcement agency to find out how/when the law will be enforced in your state.

If vaping was a gateway, there would have been an increase in use. The scant existing research purporting to show this is based on unreliable, self-reported cross-sectional data that doesn't ask if the subject vaped or smoked first, nor does it prove that the subjects wouldn't have smoked in absence of vaping.
