I have some contractors in my house remodeling a bathroom. The main guy was asking me about my vape, how it was working for me, how long I'd been switched, etc... He told me he tried one and it gave him terrible heartburn. I asked him where he got his juice and if he'd tried various liquids. He said he got his stuff at one of the vape shops, and he's tried lots of flavors (sounded like mostly tobacco flavors). I didn't really know what advice to give after that. I told him I had a little heartburn when I first started, but it went away pretty quickly, but other than that had no clue what to suggest.

Sorry I don't have any suggestions but I never had heartburn when I started vaping. I did quite a few years ago and got over it by not taking any more antacids. Once I stopped taking those I watched my diet for a few months and now I can eat and drink anything without getting heartburn.

I came to the conclusion that the antacids where part of my problem. I'd get some heartburn after eating and take an antacid. That would absorb some of the acid in my stomach which would then lead to my system, stomach, producing more acid to digest the food I had eaten. I would then get more heartburn 30-60 minutes later and then I take more antacids. It was a vicious cycle.

So I stopped taking the antacids, watched my diet and just sipped water if I felt an attack coming on. After a few weeks or a month or so I stopped having any heartburn attacks. That was like 7-9 years ago.

I have heartburn anyhow, gastroesophageal reflux disease (gerd) and on Prilosec now, was on some proton pump inhibitor when I smoked so that's lessening with vaping, anyways welcome to getting older as a smoker, it sucks...but
nicotine can affect heartburn (by causing it) most certainly, nicotine and smoking weakens the ring of muscle that keeps that acid in your lower stomach (LES) lower esophageal sphincter and it keeps that backwash of acid into your esophagus (heartburn) from happening (there's other contributing factors).

A friend of mine is in end stage COPD and she started vaping after stopping smoking and she couldn't handle the heartburn, maybe it was from gulping it, more nicotine in her system as her absorbtion smoking was very poor due to her lungs being crapped out (layman's term *lol*) so sure, it's a well known side effect of nicotine, add in some lasagna and it's a perfect storm for heartburn. :p

I used to get heartburn with some liquids, it was with some of the fruity flavours, so I am not sure it is relevant, but it was the ones that their natural (what the flavours were replicating the taste of) brothers and sisters would have been acidic, such as Rhubarb or Passionfruit.

It happened too with Swedish Fish when I had that at a high VG content.

The problem could lie with the contractor's stomach itself and it's response to the oral stimuli of vaping i.e. the stomach producing acid in readiness for digestion.

There is also a strong link between dehydration and heartburn (especially at the upper end of the gastrointestinal tract), and as we all know, vaping does dehydrate us somewhat.

Thanks, I'll pass these things along to him. It may be that he's not really ready, so unwilling to explore options.

Shootist, I have similar experiences with heartburn meds. I used to get heartburn a lot before I lost a significant amount of weight. Since I've lost the weight (~5-6 years ago) I rarely get heartburn at all. I've noticed now that on the occasions I get heartburn and take a ranitidine the heartburn will initially be better and then I will have recurring bouts for a day or two. If I skip the ranitidine and just wait it out, the heartburn goes away and doesn't come back the next day. I sometimes think those acid reducers can lead to a vicious cycle, but no doubt they do help many people.

Yeah it was that vicious cycle that opened my eyes. For years, since my late 20's, I'm now 62, I had that recurring heartburn. Stopped using the antacids about 10+ years ago and really can't remember the last time I had heartburn.

I had GERD, doctor put me on Prilosec and it gave me the worst heartburn of my entire life!! Couldn't lay down to sleep it hurt so bad!
Doctor told me that it affects about 5% of the people that way.... figures, that's one lottery I can win!!!

Don't really know why, but I don't get the GERD symptoms nearly as often as I used to.
