Amen to that, brother !
Just finished first colloidal oatmeal bath, 30 minutes worth. The directions said to 'pat dry' and allow the medicine to stay on the skin. So I did, and now sitting in the bedroom in my birthday suit feeling my skin draw up tighter.
I hope this crap works....
lol... Hope it works!

Papaw, I have too many irons in the fire. I should have thought to tell you about JEWEL WEED. If you have Jewel Weed around the poison ivy...rub that all over BEFORE trying to mess with any poison ivy stuff. They even make Jewel Weed soaps and stuff. Many times the Jewel Weed grows right in the same area as poison ivy. The dew in the morning makes the herb look sparkly, thus the name...from a distance it looks like jewels!

The rest of you and this poison ivy talk are making me itchy! I too have never had a reaction to it. I will be careful as I'm not getting any younger either.
BK might be right about that. I was probably close to 50 when I first started having trouble with it. I have always had allergies. I used to take allergy shots. But then it got to a point, the shots weren't working, and I was getting no benefit from it. I was reacting to the shots even. I am not sure if the Poison Ivy will get me, but I'm not gonna touch it to find out. The Virginia Creeper is all around my area of Texas. My friend calls it poison ivy, even though officially it is not.

Oh, and look for some plantain around, and pick some fresh leaves up. You can chew it, and make a poultice. Put that over the parts that are itching the most. It will help with itch, and inflammation. Most everyone has plantain around. It is a very common weed. Do a search on it, and then click images. There are lots of varieties of it. The seed stalks are probably up in your area. I have a guide to natural medicinal plants found in the wild. You must know you have the right thing though. Too many poisonous plants to not know...

Plant ID: Plantain - Gwen's Nest

MostlySunny...I have always been into gardening. But when I was in my late 30's, I started learning about herbs. I have forgotten quite a bit over time. I have a notebook of herbs, with photos. I started it about two years ago. It is a work in progress. I know some things, but not nearly as much as I'd like to know.

I love natural remedies but my knowledge is pretty slim. I use a few things, like my tiger balm for headaches (which I've been nursing for almost 2 days now), echinacea and aloe... Just basic stuff. I use essential oils for aromatherapy but not for healing. I just don't know enough.

I use Tiger Balm on my joints that have arthritis sometimes. Arnica Gel is good too for pain. (not great, but good enough..and doesn't have that strong smell) Maybe I just bought a brand not as good. I have a friend who makes Dit Da Jow. It works better than anything else, in my opinion. (for pain...like arthritis etc...) I started some Feverfew last year. I read somewhere it is good for headache, and not just fever etc... You chew a few leaves, or make a tincture. The only thing you need to test herbal remedies by seeing if you are allergic first. (externally such as a small spot on your skin) There are different problems that cause headaches. Do you know why you get them?

I have been starting some different herbs for my medicinal plants. I have a friend who bought some land recently. I am going to throw some seed out there. I might even plant a few young plants out there too. She is very interested in this. I even have a pot marigold, that has higher resin than most calendulas do. I plan to make a salves with it soon. I have been making tinctures, and salves, since last year.

You learn by searching the internet, or buying books. I was surprised to find a ton of material through videos on You Tube!

Good Afternoon Army. Work week over
Dealing with something I've never had to deal with before - Poison Ivy. Until now I have been immune. I would just go uproot it to protect the kids (Youngest son especially) and never think twice. Sunday I was pulling out another small patch when one root broke and the sap soaked directly into my forearm. Didn't think much of it, just washed it off and rubbed a little 70% Iso on it for good measure.
Now I have bubbles that itch like crazy on both forearms. Remind myself not to touch/ scratch/ come in contact with, but not easy to do in the course of a workday. being away from home Sunday - Wednesday didn't help either.
So I get to spend my Friday Night taking Colloidal Oatmeal baths and applying Calamine Lotion. Yeee Haaa ! :p
I sympathize with you oldman. It's a rough existence. I have a ton of poison oak here. Gotta be careful.

Papaw , I used to run all over the swamps down here , pick poison ivy and poison oak , rub it on me and have no affect whatsoever . Now I can't use a string trimmer in my backyard without breaking out in a rash and suffering for days . Something in our body chemistry must change with age , it sucks getting old . :(
Maybe the ivy is morphing.

Oh Retic, I am sorry. For some reason I thought BK made that post. That was you! I didn't realize it until I saw a quote from Bronze. I think I am losing it. This weather, and my hyper pup, are getting the best of me. Plus I have been cleaning up the Reo, and working on the batteries. I guess I'm not good at multi-tasking. Got that done, ate supper. Now I am watching the X-Files. I am starting with the first episode, and working my way through it. I hear they are going to bring it back. Now that is cool. I can think of a few more they could bring back. That is one reason I rarely watched regular tv shows. Every time I'd get hooked on a show, they would stop making it. Now thanks to Netflix, I get to see all this stuff, WITHOUT those pain in the rear commercials.
