Well after my last post, we were not supposed to get any more storms. So after the bad storms of Saturday, and then Sunday, I thought whew it is over. It was supposed to be up to 30 mph wind coming behind that storm. But a terrible wind event blew in. My light blinked. I looked at the radar, and it said significant weather advisory. Clicked it and 65-70 mph wind was at my door. It came in quick, and stayed. I lost power as well as about 50k others. Just got my power back today. This was after the tornado sirens from earlier in the day Sunday.

So PapawBrett, I am just hearing about the devastation to LA, MS and AL. Horrific is all I can say. Some houses were leveled. We never used to get this type of weather so often. People here can hardly afford to buy more food, and a ton of it will be thrown away, because of the long power outage. So that means less at the store, who cannot keep stock as it is. Many here as well as across the nation have not been able to work, and have no paycheck coming in. This just makes things much worse.

50 tornadoes went through several southern states this weekend. 2 million people lost power. I did not hear the total lives lost, yet. So there were more states involved, that I am finding out about, this evening.

There’s so much sorrow and distress right now. But this did make me laugh and it was good to feel a little lighthearted.

Me too. In fact, it usually involves me saying bad words.

Shame on me! :D

Shame on me too because my reaction is the same. :censored:

wow ... got a serious nap this time, almost 5 hrs worth... must have been really tired. Feeling pretty decent at that too :)

Rest is good! Glad you’re feeling better.

Filed an insurance claim for my roof. It got approved! YES! Wind damage. I wasn't confident it would get approved but it did. State Farm comes through.

I must have missed this info. When was your roof damaged? From the wind you were hoping would go away this morning?

Today was Santa Ana’s here. No insurance for how it wrecks your sinuses and your mood. Ugh.

The roof is 23 years old and ready to be replaced. The damage is an accumulation over the years. In my estimation it is regular wear and tear but the roofers will blame it on a particular storm that went thru recently and the ins companies buy into it. I think it is a little scammy but the adjusters go along with it and if I don’t cash in on it then all I am doing is paying for everyone else’s roof along with my own. Screw that!

Bronze you are lucky! We had hail twice and State Farm denied us both times. I get to pay for a new roof in the next few years. Our roof is 17ish years old.
Bummer! Every roofer I spoke with said State Farm was the easiest to work with (Allstate the hardest). The key here was that we had a discontinued shingle that was proven suspect long ago. So ins companies in general have been more sympathetic for those with these discontinued shingles. Roofers drive around and know what those shingles look like so those are the houses they stop at to peddle their services.

Did you get a roof inspection by a roofer?

Yes. But he was young and just getting into the business. Former student of DH's. I think that's were we made the biggest mistake. I had another roofer come later (recommended by my State Farm agent) and he said it is mostly age. That and the shingles weren't nailed properly so we were lucky to only have 1 leak.. He sealed that leak for me.

Yeah. Your roof probably just isn't wrecked enough. Hail can definitely cause damage but it has to be fairly severe (large) hail to damage roofs. Pea sized or marble sized stuff wont do it. Gotta be golf ball or larger. My house was all wind damage. We get these crazy microbursts here and that's where mine comes from. Sadly, ins only covers acts from God and not shoddy workmanship.

Also, these ins companies get weather data showing where hail and wind storms occur so if you are not in one of those areas you will be less likely to be approved. They put time limits on those storms too. You get only so many months to file a claim after those storms go thru. We had a hail storm go thru about a year ago and that time limit is about to expire. But then we had a wind storm go thru on Feb. 6th and that's the one they used to qualify me.

Twenty-three years, I'd say you got your money's worth.
And out of you insurance premiums, too.

That's what makes it kind of scammy. The roof has lived its life and needs replacing regardless of any wind damage. But my justification is my ins rates have doubled in 16 years and I'm paying for everyone else's roofs and now it's time for mine to get paid for. As Leo Durocher said, "Nice guys finish last".

Morning!

It must be true that everyone’s baking bread right now. Nearly everyone is out of bread flour, even the mill I bought from a few weeks ago. Found a mill in central NC that still had some for sale. They are so busy that they need 10 weekdays to get to your order and ship it. They only sell organic, so it costs twice as much. Shipping is twice as much too for that cross-country journey. Our friend wanted to buy this time and she was okay with it.

Going through about 5 lbs per week, between baking rolls for us and for J’s parents. Also for feeding the sourdough. I’d open a bread shop after everything settles, but the hours would suck. :)

Definitely an early to bed, early to rise kind of business. The odds in favor of healthy and wise, quite good. The odds in favor of wealthy, a little sketchy. Tough business.
Would you do mail order, if so, I will be a charter customer.
