Bronze, I didn't decide Mom needed a dog, she did. She kept talking about it and asked me to keep an eye out for one. She got very emotional talking about some of her dogs in the past. Dad got her a Doberman puppy before he retired early. He wanted a dog to protect my mom when he worked night shifts. She loved that dog, and he loved her. Her favorite dog was a Shih Tzu. He was close to grown when she got him. I went with her when she chose him. She had always wanted a Shih Tzu, and this one was free. That dog adored my mother.

She told me she wanted to go "look" at the local pet shops. We went to two of them. She looks at the newspaper everyday to see if a dog appeals to her. I have been searching for her a dog to help her. She missed having a dog. I know when I had my last dog before this one, it took close to a year before I was ready for another dog. She had a Doberman & a Shih Tzu. (not at the same time, they lived until old age) Before that we always had dogs when I was a kid. I don't ever remember NOT having one. She had a white GSD when I was a newborn. So I've lived with dogs my whole life.

I don't mind prodding David, because he will be ready when the time is right for him. He keeps posting Corgi pictures, so I know he must be close to being ready to getting a new dog.

(((hugs)))

..Plus there is a lot of rescue places looking to find homes for dogs. . . .[/QUOTE]

Amen. There are too many dogs that need homes to go to a pet store and buy one.

Never buy a dog from a pet store. A pox on pet stores.

kkay, it's too late now in your situation, but I learned an important lesson on bringing a new dog into a home with an existing dog. When you do that, you are bringing the new dog into the existing dog's territory, and it's their instinct to be defensive of their territory. And it's especially true if the new dog has any "alpha" tendencies that the existing dog senses as a threat.

The thing to do is to introduce them in neutral territory, such as a park or someone else's yard. Let them get to know each other on neutral ground and they are more likely to be ok with each other when you bring them home.

Good morning Army:)

We be battling those super tiny, almost microscopic ants this morning. Of course in the kitchen. Followed their trail to the outside so hopefully the spray will do its job. They are after sugar this cycle. Did you know that they have different cycles? They do. I'm going to be putting out some Terro bait later. I do believe it works on their sweet cycle.

I left some apple pie in a plastic case on the counter last night  Amazing how quickly ants find stuff.

Pappy, I have no one here that could do the neutral ground thing. I have known about that. But I also considered the fact my dog is not a dog lover at all. She has never played one on one with any dog. My son's old dog liked my puppy, but he could only take about 1-2 minutes of her rambunctious behavior before he started to get perturbed. Now if he was in his pen, they would be friendly towards each other. I keep my dog separated from my son's dog. They are friendly to each other, in this manner. I keep them separated even in the house. My dog also liked a friend of the family's two Corgis. She hasn't seen them in a long time though. She was introduced to these dogs when she was a young puppy. Other than that she has bad negative experiences with strange dogs. One dog in the park was good with other dogs, and that owner brought his dog closer and talked with me. My dog calmed down, and decided that dog was okay. She was about one year old at that time. She decided other dogs were bad when the neighbor's dog dug under the fence into my yard one day. I was out there taking pictures of my puppy. From then on she was suspicious of other dogs.

My dog likes strangers if she gets a good vibe from them these days. She usually doesn't like anyone around my property. She doesn't want anyone strange or any animal that is strange on my property. Meeting the puppy in my yard would've been a total disaster. My dog is not sure what to do about this puppy. She is nice to her, but she is wondering if she will herd the dog, be the enforcer or just a friend. I will let them have more time on the floor together today. I will not allow them together without constant supervision though.

Now for the way I did it, it worked for me with introducing this puppy to my dog. My dog knows if I bring someone in, they are good. Yes, a dog is different. Had this been a full grown dog it would've never worked. The fact she was a young puppy made all the difference. My dog likes the puppy now, and is friendly to her. My dog is aggressive towards all dogs in the park. (except the one I mentioned) I was working on that, but then stopped taking her. This was when my mother was very ill. I didn't have the time or energy to deal with her towards other dogs then. I think she has fear aggression towards dogs. So this puppy is helping her see that not all dogs outside of the family are bad & should be looked at with suspicion. My dog doesn't have fear aggression with people. She likes most people, as long as they aren't on my property or close to it. She thinks everywhere she can see from my house is her property. We are working on that. My son's dog taught her to bark at any people she sees. This was when she spent some time out in the backyard. Now she is strictly a house dog. We have play & training sessions every day.

I realize your mom wanted the dog but it seems it becomes your problem when it doesn't work out. I know how hard it is to find homes for animals so I feel for you.

Terro liquid (comes in a bottle) is better than those expensive traps. Whatever you do, put the liquid outside and not inside. They'll find it. Drip about 15 - 20 drops once or twice a day. After a week or two they disappear (and will reappear some other day). I fight those things all the time.

Did you get your chemo Thurs?

kkay, I understand the challenges you're facing. And, believe me, my heart goes out to you.

I've got one dog right now, but I'm preparing to bring two more dogs in (Tater and Jake) that I mentioned a month or so ago in this thread. Then I'll have my own challenges, although Tater and Jake will be strictly outside dogs.

But Molly loves to go out to the barn and the pasture, which is where Tater and Jake will be. So, they'll all have to learn to get along. Since she's female and they're both males, that might make it easier. And I'm gonna have both of the boys "fixed" before I bring them over here. I don't need them digging out every time they smell a female dog that might be feeling froggy.

Robin, ants drive me crazy. Haven't had them in a while but I keep Terro on hand.

Termites (we think) seem to be swarming around here right now. Outside.. nothing in the house. I rode my bike tonight, 5 miles out and back, and they were getting on me then too. So it's not just us.

Evening army! Same old same old around here, just keeping up with life as much as possible. Way too much going on and we've all had some awful cold that's lasted almost 3 weeks now. Seems to be on its way out finally.

Kkay, with my last puppy I found the training to go much smoother when I kept her leash tethered to me at all times when she was out of her crate. If I couldn't watch her for even ten minutes she went back in the crate. For a week she hated the crate and the leash but with constant treats came to love having her own "den" and potty trained completely by about 3 weeks. Smaller dogs can be tougher to potty train but overall the same method works for all dogs. I know it's the last thing you wanted, good luck to you.

Hope all is well with all of you and everyone made it through the storms ok. Smooches y'all

In one of my old houses I had an infestation of tiny ants. I found that out when I bit into a cookie from my cupboard. It seemed less dense, so I looked at it more closely. Tiny ants all over it! Ewwwww!

I went on a rampage of spraying, cleaning - and from then on all snacks were packed in sealed plastic containers.

Welcome Monnie!

Pappy, usually the dogs of opposite sex do get along better on the initial moments. But I have seen times when that wasn't so. Usually males are accepting of females. I have even seen female dogs that have a problem with other females. But that is not the norm. I have found that fences allow some dogs to meet, without as much friction. The first few times they may bluff, or be for real. One thing that helped me with this puppy is the dogs here got to smell the puppy smell for 3 days before they actually saw her. I am sure they smelled my mother's scent too. If I go to 2 different places where my dog knows the people, she gets sad that I left her at home. Pappy, I would let the male dogs meet the female separately in a neutral place. One on one is less intimidating to the female that way. If you have a couple of people to help, even better.

Always, yes that is a good idea. I did that with my last dog before the one I have now. I tried to get my mother to do that, but she didn't want to. She wants the puppy to have freedom. I told her the puppy needs to earn the freedom, slowly. It is more like graduation as you build up to it. The puppy potty training has gone extremely well so far, at MY house. If I can't have my eagle eye on the pup every second, she is either in my lap, or in her crate. I am not letting her have freedom to run around and get into trouble. I am taking her out more than necessary, to go potty and burn off some energy. The pup minds pretty good here. I took her to Mom's house and she gets excited to see my mother. Then she starts to act like a different puppy there. She got Mom on the thumb with a sharp tooth. So I don't know how this is going to end up. I guess time will tell.
