What does Folding @ Home mean?

Through internet connection, Stanford U uses your computer during idle time to help fold proteins (do computer calculations) to find cure for cancer. Very non-intrusive. used to do it with MacOSG team. (MacOSG mac owner support group).

You probably can't believe it was your best friend.

I lost a good friend (not best friend) when we were 14 years old. We played sports together all the time and went to school together since we were infants. Pressure built up in his skull and killed him. That was 1974. I still can't believe it. Ted Whittoff. I can see his face, hear his voice, and see him shoot a basketball as vividly today as I did in 1974. That was nearly 40 years ago.

Yeah you are absolutely right, Bronze. I will still double take when I see people that look like him.

Someone here posted this picture a while back and I saved it because it looks exactly like him after he found out he was terminal

2yvemu7y.jpg

I mean EXACTLY like him, to be honest I'm not sure it's not him. He flew out to Vegas to spend his savings and have a good time in his final weeks and this is exactly how I figured he would be spending his time. I couldn't get work off without losing my job so I didn't go with him. I regret that decision every single day.

His cancer started out testicular but he was to afraid to go to the dr until it was too late. The doc said it was the worst case he had ever seen and he was immediately sent to surgery. They weren't able to contain it and it spread like wildfire to his stomach lymph nodes and eventually his brain. It was one of the hardest things to watch happen.

When he came back from Vegas I ended up quitting my job and sitting with him all day everyday until the day he passed. I was right there with him when he took his last breath and even carried him out to the hearse when it was all over with.

Man I miss that guy

RIP Mikey

I see Bronze and April are the resident trouble makers again as usual eh? Just kidding...I've heard diet Coke is worse than Mountain Dew. Never been a Dew fan. I'm more a Dr. Pepper and Coke person...although now it's become Dr. Thunder and Cola from Walmart. Sprite (or Twist Up...yes also from Walmart) is becoming one of my favorites. I also prefer the Diet Rite drinks...specifically the Tangerine flavor. It has nothing bad in it including no aspartame.

So the sex education books are in! My favorite subject actually...and I'm NEVER ashamed of talking about it. It's only nature. Too many people are screwed in the head from thinking there is something wrong with it. I've already found one fallacy in one of the books...I guess I'll have to get my trusty pencil out and make some notes for my son. :D Maybe I should write a book...

Anyhoo...how's it going Army? I wish Alabama had a lottery. Backwards and backwoods stuffy conservatives. Hrmph!

You're a good friend Slim.

There is a movie called 50/50. See it.

I wish they'd get rid of our lottery here. They said all the money was going to schools. Hardly any of it does. It goes to politicians pet projects. Meanwhile, all the poor people and welfare recipients spend all their money on lottery tickets and never win because the odds are better you'll get struck by lightning five times before you'll win the lottery. Meanwhile, we have to take care of the poor people and welfare recipients in the form of more welfare. Let's switch houses RJ. You can come here and play the lottery and I'll move there and save the tax money. :)

I actually just watched it a couple weeks ago. I held off for a long time, I wasn't sure I'd be able to watch it. We were a lot like those two in the movie. He had a great attitude until the very end and could still laugh about everything he was going through. While he was getting his chemo treatments he would have us all laughing in the room. Pretty amazing considering what everyone was there for.

Glad we had this chat, General. Brought back a lot of memories.

They already do that at the casinos and I already pay for them. May as well give me a chance at it for a buck or two! I thought about driving to Georgia...stopping by to see HHV...and buying a couple of tickets. ;)

He sounds like a good man. If he could talk to you right now, would he tell you to be happy and live your life?

I had a guy working for me who had testicular cancer. He called me one night and told me he was a goner. He survived and went on to work for me awhile longer before I relocated to NC. He worked another five years or more and was fine.

He would say that for sure. He always said not to worry about him and that soon he would be better off than we were :)

Techno-marketing. You allow ECF to monitor your PC. Or something like that. Not for me, do as you wish...

Sorry Papaw, but it has nothing to do with marketing. It's about folding proteins for medical research; you're letting Stanford University to send packages of calculations to your computer; your com does the work and sends it back to SU. Helping to find cures for cancer, Alzheimer's and other diseases.

I started folding @ home while a member of the MacOSG forum. It's a worthy cause. :toast:

BB-Q was a fairly good success - I invited 3 friends over and only one could make it, so we bought a pre-BB-Q'd bird and some sticky rice from a reputable vender I know near the house. (I couldn't see going through the trouble of setting up the grill and all for just us two.) Mrs. Chak fried up some pork egg rolls and had the help mix up some spicy papaya salad. Topped off with some ice cold Heineken... and of course HHV juices on the side. To finish the meal there was a sampling of two fresh flavors of popcorn, cheese and chocolate. (wish we had done the Pad Thai flavor today; it would have blended in wonderfully) :pop::pop:

All in all, it turned out pretty good. Mrs. Chak suggested we do the bar-bie for my birthday coming up on the 29th next month. "Cool!!", I say to myself. "This is her talking, not me asking. I can celebrate one year smoke free at the same time!"

LOL - that's me on the left and the middle all at once. Just finished for the day and it's 11 pm. Audits. Hate audits - there's 6 auditors in the team with wish-lists and "want to do it a different way" and "would like to see the original letter/ticket purchase form/donation letter for these items [presents me with a very very long list].......and 1 of me. four of them are working fulltime in our conference room with 2 computers each. You can figure the rest

I sure wish that for profit corporations and GOVERNMENT underwent this amount of detail. Sheesh.

Yup, wonderful Wednesday evening. Good morning General. Nice Avi!

Good morning Army!!! May your day be peaceful and productive.

That's me on the right. :D

I was definitely planning on laughing my envious little head off - until I saw how painful it was for you. Ouch! I'm glad the ankle is getting better April. Close one - you could easily have fractured it. Hugs

Here it is... And it's coming down in a few hours! Laugh or cry?
