I find it infinitely fascinating to talk to elderly people. My god the changes they have seen in their lifetime is astounding. There was this one that used to come into the salon I worked at, they still used buggies when she was little. She lived through getting electricity, phone, cars.... The list is endless. It blows the mind.

Agree Robin! My grandfather was born in 1890. He died when I was 26 years old. I used to love hearing him tell stories about all the stuff he saw...the inventions, the things that came about during his time. Of course, I was interested in his WW1 tales. He fought in France and left a leg there. He didn't care to talk about it much so I didn't get all that I wanted out of him. One time I asked him how he could shoot at another human being. He said it was easy when they were shooting at him and bullets were flying all over the place. Made sense.

When I was younger I spent lots of time with the 'old folks', mostly relatives. My father's parents dated in a horse drawn wagon. I could spend hour after hour listening to my (Great) Uncle Thurman telling stories. They're all gone now, long gone.

I was one when my Great Grandfather died. He was 9 years old when the Civil War ended. :)

He lived to 104.

Just had a nice long conversation with a ww2 marine pilot. Telling me a little bit bout being a POW and having a stroke last year and being with all the young kids coming home daily in pieces. The man was 18-19 when he went to war and all he cares about today is finding the proper butter on sale. His aid called in sick and this man was doing a fine job shopping on his own. He made a mention how he's better off below because he's costing the government too much money. I made it known loud and clear whatever they are doing for him still isn't enough. That right there is my reason for coming to work today. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using Tapatalk 4
I couldn't agree with you more . My grandfather fought in both world wars. He was 15 years old and an observation balloonist in the first one and told me about having to parachute out when german fighter planes attacked . He then went on and him and our neighbor were in the same unit in the second world war and they fought in Italy and then the Pacific, he gave me japanese yen and I don't want to even tell y'all how he got it , it was a pretty gruesome story . He was just a first generation American, his parents immigrated here from Ireland but he told me he owed it to this country to serve . After the war he became a cop, and what amazes me still is after everything that man saw and done I never once saw him lose his composure , I never heard an angry word come from his mouth. I highly doubt my own ability to maintain if I was faced with the same circumstances. He left a lot to live up to. Simply put we owe them everything we can give.

Come to think of it, what stories do I have to tell? That we only had three TV channels, we would have to get up and actually change the channel. Snow in the picture was a normal thing. Black and white on TV was the norm but rich people had color tv's. I didn't know the Wizard of Oz was in color after the house settles in Oz and Dorothy opens the door to a colorful world. I discovered that later in life.

Life before central air, computers, cell phones, video games. Not really much more than that. Hopefully we'll be able to tell our grandchildren and great grandchildren that we were a part of the ecig revolution! :D

Speaking of which....Edd, you may want to register for the next CASAA meeting as soon as you get the email. I have a feeling a lot of people are going to want to sit in for that one. CASAA has the listening session with the FDA tomorrow.

I do tell my son that my Dad was fishing for his large family at the age of 10 just to have food on the table. My Mom told me just last week that that is why my Dad is so generous with his kids and grandkids, because his Dad wasn't generous and all his struggles in his early life. And he has a way of speaking about how to overcome and do well and to save and stay simple. So he'll talk about positive things, but it must have been a very rough life for him since he will not discuss the struggles. He gets a bright look on his face talking about the Navy and it being the best thing he ever did. Him and Mom traveled all over and got out of the boonies and poorness and made a great life for themselves.

However, my Mom reminds him that he married up and he doesn't disagree.

I try so hard with my son and I think so far he's a great kid...but I do worry about how much of my lecturing is truly getting in. And some of it he'll have to learn the hard way I reckon.

Chores await.

:vapor:

RJ, when it boils down, nearly all men marry up. :)

My grandfather was still a typical irishman and my grandmother told me that on the night I was born, being his first grandchild that he came walking home roaring drunk in the pouring rain pushing a huge bicycle that he bought for me and singing Danny Boy at the top of his lungs . My grandma got him inside and asked him
" Mac what were ye thinking , the lad's jest a few minutes old ?". He just hugged her and laughed and went back to his singing . That story makes me want to laugh and cry at the same time . That being said I do find that I like the Guiness a bit much myself lol.

Oh and Slim this is for you .

There are many good reasons for drinking,
One has just entered my head-
If a man doesn't drink when he's living,
How the hell can he drink when he's dead !

OMG David - Dave Allen is my favouritest comedian EVER! The one that always sticks in my mind is the two funerals just finishing at the same time but there's only one last cemetery plot....I have no idea why that one because it's kinda corny, but it still makes me collapse in laughter.

The topics lately made do some looking for what I put in my sig. In doing so I found this and had a good laugh. I watched Dave Allen on PBS when I was younger. This part of his closing...May your God go with you...has stuck with ever since.
